Thomas Marshall

Colonel Thomas Marshall of "Oak Hill", Fauquier Co., VA and later ofWoodford Co., KY, was a surveyor and often attended Washington on hisexpeditions for Lord Fairfax. He served in the French and Indian War asa Lieut. of Volunteers. During Braddock's defeat he was engaged inbuilding Fort Necessity. At the beginning of the Revolution he was aMajor of the "Culpeper Minute Men" and later was Col. of the 3rd VARegiment in the Revolution. This Regiment saved the Continental Armyfrom destruction at the Battle of Brandywine. For his gallant service inthis engagement the House of Burgess voted him a sword. He wasfrequently a member of the Burgess and was at the Convention of 1776which met at Williamsburg and declared Virginia independent of theBritish Empire. In 1785 he removed to KY and represented Fayette Co., inthe Virginia Legislature, 1787.
