Harry Burnley joined a volunteer company in the American Revolution in
March 1776. That company was being raised by his Uncle Cpt. Harry
Terrell, and was attached to the Fifth Regiment of the Virginia
Continental Forces. Family members have a copy of his commission as
Ensign, signed by Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson. He served two
years under Cpt. Terrell and then volunteered again. He was in battles
in Williamsburg, Suffolk, Norfolk and Springfield. He joined General
Washington at White Marsh. He later served under Gen. Daniel Morgan.
