Notes

William Baron De Montagu

Sorry - This note belongs with his son William, Earl of Salisbury 1301-1344

Steward of Royal houshold of Edward II, 1316, according to Michael Hicks (Who`s Who in Late Medieval England), he is the most conspicuous example in the 14th century of a sudden rise to greatness by royal favor and patronage.
He established a close personal relationship with the somewhat younger Edward III that lasted all his life.
It was he who led the coup d`etat that overthrew Isabella and Mortimer in 1330
For his son he secured the hand of the Mortimer heiress and a daughter married the future Earl of March. As final evidence of his new status, he founded, built and endowed a new priory of Augustinian canons at Bisham as the family mausoleum, where he was buried following a jousting accident when still only 43. Such a flow of favors enabled him to meet wthout apparent accident the ransom he incurred about 1340. His career demonstrates how one individual might make the fortune of his family in one career of brilliance at court and on the battlefield. His son, less favoured, lost much of his gains.

Pierre Gervais-Jarvis

Family tradition that Pierre, together with Thee of his brothers, came
from the area around Iberville, Que. to Vermont in the mid 1800`s. Pierre settled in Windsor, was gardener for Emerson at what later (c1920) became the Windsor Hospital and later (1970`s) the Stoughton House (level 2-4 Community Care). He had 11 children of which there was the only one son, Peter, to pass on the name. Edouard and Francois went to the Ascutneyville, Vt area, had farms and are the ancestors of many bearing the name of Jarvis. Another brother may have gone to R.I. Pierre`s mother-in-law, Monique (St. Marie) Field Lamothe, widow of John Field and later Pierre Lamothe is buried in the Jarvis family lot in St. Francis Cemetery.

There is a picture of him in the possession of Connie Albright, daughter
of Jane Reynolds Albright. I believe he had a patch over one eye.

St Alexandre is a little town (pop. abt 500 - c1996) abt 5 mi so of Iberville. The church, for which the town is named, was built about 1851. Visited by GJR and SHR in May 1996, beautiful with wonderful stained glass windows and in exceptionally well preserved and immaculate condition.

Philomene Julie Field

Hello Gerald,

Thank you very much for your very nice e-mail.
I found Philomene Field middlle name's in the St-Alexandre of Iberville microfilm. There is no connection betwen my Gervais branch with the Gervaise and Gervais-dit-le-Parisien. My ancestor Jean-Baptiste Gervais is born in France from the marriage of Charles Gervais and Jacquette Rose from St-Germain parish in Rennes city, Ille-et-Vilaine district, in France. May be you could find more infos about the Gervais with Roger Gervais http://pages.prodigy.net/rjgervais/RJGERVAIS/
I found 137 Gervais, 1 Gervais-Jarvis, 104 Gervaise.
On the family tree maker site: there is a page about the Mathieu Gervais dit le Parisien. I don't remember the URL but you could find that page (it is easy).
Best regards, Louise Gervais

Dear Louise,

I noticed you have included a lot of my Gervaise/Jarvis relatives and ancestors in your Gervais database. They are all descendants of Jean Gervaise and Anne Archambault through: 2. Nicolas Gervaise & Madeleine Payet 27 June 1693, Pointe aux Trembles, Montreal; 3. Pierre Gervaise & Marguerite Senecal (which you have in your data). Then: Joseph, Jean Baptiste, Joseph, Pierre, Peter and Evelyn.

I am also a descendant of Joseph-Mathieu Gervais, dit Le Parisian through his daughter Romaine; but I have not found any connection to your Jean - Baptiste and Marie-Jeanne Tessier. Was he born in Canada? Is he a 3rd Gervais immigrant ancestor?

Great job!! I did not know that my great grandmother Philomene Field Jarvis had a middle name, Julie, where did you find that? I have not found the marriage of John Field and Monique Ste-Marie, her 2nd was to Pierre LaMothe at St Athanase Iberville 5 Feb 1850 and she is called the widow of John Field. She appears to be the daughter of Pierre Ste-Marie and Marie-Catherine Moquin who were married 3 June 1776, LaPrairie.

If you ever want to go out their "grandmother`s" lines let me know.

Gerry Rice

Charles Elliot Rice

Was a photographer at the time he married Ellen Hynes. Later he was listed
as an employee of C.W. Sayward, manufacturor of doors, sash, blinds and stairrails; dealer in lumber, glass and putty; also custom planing and sawing.
Loc. Central St., Wood.stock, Vt.
Family tradition has it that he cut himself while doing carpentry work and the wound didn`t bleed much, though he died of consumption, could that have been caused by "blood poisoning" or massive infection?
Have not as yet found date of a divorce or an annulment from Mary Jane Heath of
Barnard; but the marriage to Ellen is recorded in the Woodstock, Vt town records.
