Began his reign in 1226 under the regency of his mother, Blanche of Castile. In 1241-43 he secured submission of Poitou, repulsed an English invasion, and defeated Raymond VII of Toulouse. He led the Seventh Crusade to Egypt (1248), was defeated and captured at El Mansura (1250), and after being ransomed, remained in the Holy Land until 1254. Another Crusade against Tunis, ended with his death of the plague soon after his landing. His reign was for France a period of peace, prosperity, and progress. He stamped out private warfare, simplified administration, improved the distribution of taxes, and extended the rights of appealing to the Crown to all cases. The great Gothic cathederals were largely built during his reign as was Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Embodying the ideals of a Christian monarch, he was canonized in 1297. His feast day is Aug 25th

According to Charles Elmer Rice in his book "By the Name of Rice" Thomas is the father of Edmund Rice , our immigrant ancestor. This apparently has been disproven. - 1998 GJR
Whether Thomas is the father of Edmund or the son of William Ap Rice of Bohmer is unproven and I have therefore noted the questioned linkage in this program, leaving however this line back through the Howards and the FitzUrans
