ROSS MUNDY: As a result of a wreck at Ashley in which a truck of the Sexton Manufacturing Company of Fairfield was struck by a southbound Illinois Central passenger train about 1 o'clock this morning, Ross Mundy of Carrier Mills was instantly killed and Adolph Krauss, son of K. O. Krauss, manager of the plant at Fairfield, was seriously injured. The truck was totally demolished.
According to information here, the driver of the truck was Mr. Mundy and he had been accompanied to St. Louis by Adolph Krauss, the latter having gone for the purpose of buying a car, but whether they were enroute to St. Louis or were returning from that place is not clearly established.
Ross Mundy was a young man, but his age could not be learned as but little was known regarding him at Fairfield as he had been a resident of that place only since entering the employ of the Sexton Company about a week ago. He came from Carrier Mills or vicinity. It is stated, and it is thought he was not married.
His companion, Adolph Krauss, is about 22 years old, and is employed in the Sexton plant at Fairfield, under his father, manager of the plant. Adolph was taken at once to Centralia and placed in a hospital. At first, it was thought he would die of his injuries, but it was stated this morning his condition appeared somewhat improved. He suffered a serious injury to his head and was otherwise injured. Reports were to the effect this morning that he might recover.
No details could be learned as to how the accident occurred other than that the truck was struck by the Illinois Central engine at the Ashley crossing of that road, and the train, it is said to have been a southbound fast passenger train.
The truck was totally demolished. It had been loaded with underwear, it is said, and the underwear was scattered over a wide area, according to reports here. The company runs a large number of trucks from Fairfield and Mt. Vernon where they have manufacturing plants, the principal plant being located at Fairfield, and it is stated all of their freight, or practically all, is carried both ways by truck. These trucks are run both night and day.
The body of the dead man had not been taken to Fairfield up to a late hour this morning, but it was supposed it would be, and taken from that place to his home for burial.
