The war diary for the West Yorks Regiment for 3 May 1917 records an attack on the German lines at Gavrelle in France? Of a battalion of 547 officers and men, 12 officers were reported killed or missing and in the other ranks, there were 15 killed, 122 wounded and 262 missing. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website records: Memorial: Arras Memorial Grave Reference: Bay 4 Location: The Arras Memorial is in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, which is in the Boulevard du General de Gaulle in the western part of the town of Arras. The cemetery is near the Citadel, approximately 2 kilometres due west of the railway station. The website also records his regiment as 15th Bn., West Yorkshire Regt. (Prince of Wales's Own). |

Phylis married a Clifford Smith, they had two sons Brian and David they still live in Stockton. Brian became governor of Northalerton prison then governor of Shanklin prison on the Isle of white. He is now retired and lives not far along from the Horse and Jockey pub / roundabout at Stockton. |
