Note | When John's father died in 1793, his will charged his eldest son, Thomas (O422) with bringing up John and his brothers William (O462) & Henry (O472) until they were 16 years old. John was 8 years old when his father died. | |
Note | In the 1861 census, he appears as John Black (after his mother) and on his wife Jane's death certificate he is recorded as John Black Elliff. His assumed son William (P364) also used this alias at various times of his life. | |
