John Gilliland was born circa 1790.2 He married Rebecca McBrayer, daughter of David McBrayer and Mary Young, on 10 April 1811 at Buncombe County, North Carolina.3

John and Rebecca's two sons, Wiley Buford and David McBrayer were born in South Carolina. Some sources say Greenville District. In the 1820 Federal Census for Greenville District there is a John Gillahan with a household of three males under 10, one male 26-45, and one female 26-45. This fits perfectly with what we know about John. Listed on the same page are two other Gillilands, David and Elijah. David is the oldest and Elijah falls in the 16-26 age bracket.

On July 31, 1824, John Gilliland, Greenville District, South Carolina, sold 100 acres on both sides of Oil Camp Creek, bordering Aaron Slaton and David Gilliland (originally surveyed for John Gilliland on May 15, 1813), to Thomas Gilliland, Greenville District, South Carolina, for $100. James Gilliland, Pickens District, and David Gilliland, were witnesses. This would correspond with the fact that John and Rebecca moved to Alabama prior to the 1830 census.

We know from David Gilliland's estate file that his sons were Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, James, John, Elijah, and Jesse.4

According to an article that appeared in the Gadsden Times on February 19, 1967, written by a descendant, John and Rebecca lived near Cowpens, South Carolina and in Buncombe County, North Carolina before moving into Tennessee where they lived about one year. They then went down the Tennessee River on flat rafts and landed at Guntersville. They lived for a short time where Albertville is now located and in 1822 moved to Bristows Cove where they lived until John's death.3

John Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Blount County, Alabama, with a household listed as two males under 5, one male 5-9, one male 30-39, one female 5-9, and one female 30-39. He was living three households away from David McBrayer who was probably Rebecca's father. Unfortunately, the census doesn't correspond with John's sons' ages. Byers would have been age 16, Wiley, age 14, and David, age 12. Were they living with David McBrayer? His household showed one male 10-15, one male 15-20, one male 50-60, one female 10-15, and one female 40-50.5

John Gilliland died in 1834.2

Some genealogical sources state that John was a Methodist preacher and in the book "A History of Methodism in Alabama" by Rev. Anson West on page 463 we find that a John Gilliland was a member of the Quarterly Conference for the Talladega Mission and was present for a meeting held at Bethel Meeting house on May 25, 1833. On page 471, a John Gilliland is credited with being active in the Talladega Circuit during the period from 1833 through 1845. At this point we have no way of knowing if these are the same John Gillilands.6

Rebecca McBrayer was born on 5 March 1794 at Horseshoe Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina.1 She was the daughter of David McBrayer and Mary Young.2 Rebecca McBrayer married John Gilliland on 10 April 1811 at Buncombe County, North Carolina.3 Rebecca McBrayer was probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, John Gilliland, in the 1830 Federal Census of Blount County, Alabama.4

After her husband's death in 1834, Rebecca moved, with her parents, to Little Wills Valley where she entered a large tract of land just north of Attalla, and lived there until her death.3 Rebecca McBrayer was probably the female age 40-49 listed in the household of her son, David McBrayer Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of DeKalb County, Alabama.5
