Alexander Gilliland

M, #1268, b. circa 1809, d. 4 November 1883
Last Edited=21 Jun 2020
Alexander Gilliland was born circa 1809 at South Carolina.1 He was the son of Thomas Gilliland and Mary Ann Galliher. Alexander Gilliland was probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Thomas Gilliland, in the 1810 Federal Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina.2 Alexander Gilliland was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Thomas Gilliland, in the 1820 Federal Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina.3

Alexander Gilliland married Hepsaba/Hepseybeth Skelton, daughter of Hosea Skelton and Mahala Conwell, on 30 January 1834 at Pendleton District, South Carolina, by Rev. D. Humphreys.4 (According to an inscription in the Dunn's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, where Hepsaba was buried, they were married on January 12, 1833.)5 On September 4, 1835, Alexander purchased 200 acres of land on Big Generostee Creek, a branch of the Savannah River, Anderson County, South Carolina, from Reuben Dollar, for $320.6 Then on September 7th he sold those same 200 acres to Williamson Dollar for $360.7 On December 21, 1837, Alexander purchased 100 acres of land on a branch of Saddlers Creek on a section of the Savannah River in Anderson County from John Barrett for $350.8

Alexander appeared on the tax lists for Anderson County, South Carolina, for the years 1837-1843. He was the only Gilliland on the tax lists for that county.9

Alexander Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Anderson County, South Carolina, with a household listed as two males 20-29, one male 30-39, and one female 20-29.10

On March 25, 1843, Alexander was involved in two court cases in the Court of Common Pleas in Anderson County, South Carolina. The first case was brought by Samuel G. Earle where he claimed that Alexander owed him $282.37.11 The second case was brought by Fleetwood Rice who claimed that Alexander owed him $119.01.11 In both cases the judgment was for the plaintiff and Alexander was ordered to pay the debt.

Around 1844 Alexander and Hepsaba went to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. There is a record of a deed of land purchased by A. Gilliland from John Thomas in Deed Book W, page 339 (1844-1845).5 There's an Ele Gilland, age 41, blacksmith, born in SC, with wife Elsibeth (?), age 36, living in District 2, Tuscaloosa Co, AL in the 1850 census. Ages are correct for Alex and Hepsaba. The name Alexander was often spelled with an "E" in those days. Also living with them were 23 year old Harris Holman and 6 year old Amos E. Lankford.12

On January 1, 1852 Alexander purchased 40.2825 acres of public land (SE¼NW¼) in Section 30, Township 19S, Range 12W, Tuscaloosa County.

On November 1, 1855, Alexander and Hepsaba entered a plea to receive their share of the estate of James Conwell, Hepsaba's maternal grandfather.13

On June 1, 1858 Alexander purchased a little over 321 acres in various sections of Township 19S, Range 12W.

Alexander Gilliland and Hepsaba/Hepseybeth Skelton appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Western Division, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, enumerated 25 July 1860.1 Their names were recorded as Abraham and Harriett but this is definitely Alexander and Hepsaba. Her father, Hosea Skelton, age 72, is living with them and Alexander and Hepsaba were named as such in the probate papers of James Conwell, Anderson County, South Carolina in 1851 as being from Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.13,14 Also living with them was 15 year old Moses C. Gilliland born in Alabama. Who was he? Was this actually the Lankford (sp?) boy that was living with them in 1850? Hepsaba died in 1865.15

Alexander Gilliland married Catherine Skelton, daughter of Hosea Skelton, on 13 January 1867.16,17 Catherine was his sister-in-law.13

Alexander Gilliland and Catherine Skelton appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Crossland, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, enumerated 23 August 1870.16 Also living with them were Elizabeth Gilleland, age 11 (not sure who she was); John and Hepsey McCarthy (Catherine's children from her first marriage to Colin McCarthy); and Amanda and George T. Gilleland, the children of Augustus Gilliland and his wife Mary Elizabeth Bailey.

Alexander Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Crossland, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, enumerated 16 June 1880.18 He was listed a divorced and his nephew George was living with him.

Alexander Gilliland died on 4 November 1883 at Sipsey (River or Swamp), Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.19

Alexander had no children of his own. On 2 December 1884, James White, administrator of the estate of Alexander listed these persons as Heirs at Law of said deceased: Thomas Gilliland (Thomas E. Gilliland) and George Gilliland (George Thomas A. "Bud" Gilliland) of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama; Mary Pearson (Mary Ann Gilliland), wife of Samuel Pearson of Pickens County, Alabama; Amanda Homan (Amanda E. Gilliland), wife of Isaac Homan of Mississippi; James Gilliland (James J. Gilliland) and Samuel Gilliland (Samuel W. Gilliland), residing in Georgia; and the children of Sarah Hendon (Sarah Gilliland), wife of B. N. Hendon, residing in the State of Texas.20

Descendant Chart of Robert Gilliland, Sr.
Allen T. Gilliland was born on 19 October 1783 at Tennessee; 1860 census says South Carolina.2,3,4 He was the son of Robert Gilliland Sr. By virtue of part of land warrant #42, assigned of Robert Gilliland, Allen entered 200 acres of land in the 3rd District, 14th Section, which according to a reconstructed map of Tennessee’s various early Surveyors’ Districts, would have been in or around Overton County.1,5 Allen T. Gilliland married Polly Pascal/Paschal on 12 December 1809 at Pulaski County, Kentucky.6 James K. Polk Gilliland, in his family history, said that Allen became acquainted with Polly by having taken a prospecting trip with his father to Pulaski County.7 On September 13, 1812, Allen was granted 200 acres of land in Overton County, Tennessee, in the 3rd District, 14th Section. The land was originally granted to a James Yarbrough (Warrant No. 42 dated October 1, 1801 and entered on August 12, 1807 by No. 541) by the state of North Carolina for military services performed by Yarbrough. If I'm reading these documents correctly, Robert Gilliland first became the assignee of the heirs of Mr. Yarbrough on August 31, 1807. Then Robert assigned this land to Allen on August 12, 1808 (see above.)8,1

Allen T. Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Overton County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 10-15, one male 26-44, and one female 26-44.9 Allen was not found in the 1830 Federal census for Overton County, Tennessee. I went through the census page by page. In fact, even though land records prove there were Gillilands living in this area none were found in the available census. I believe some of the census records for this county may have been lost.

Allen was listed on the 1836 tax list for Overton County, Tennessee, in District #5 as was his son James.10 Allen and James were also listed on the 1837 tax list for Overton County, Tennessee, in District #5.10

Allen T. appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Overton County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male 50-59, and one female 40-49.11 On December 28, 1840 Allen sold 100 acres, of his 200 acre tract of land on the Roaring River that he was granted in 1812, to his son James for $500.12 He and Polly Pascal/Paschal appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 1, Overton County, Tennessee, enumerated 21 September 1850.2 Also listed as living with them is an Allen Gilliland, age 13, who I believe is their grandson and was counted twice in the census. Allen T. Gilliland and Polly Pascal/Paschal appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Overton County, Tennessee, enumerated 16 July 1860.3

Allen T. Gilliland died on 16 November 1860 at Overton County, Tennessee, at age 77.7 (The tombstone is hard to read and the year of death could be 1869. Someone would have to take a rubbing of it to make sure.) He was buried at Gilliland Family Cemetery, Rickman, Overton County, Tennessee.4
A descendant of this Allen Gilliland has a 33/37 DNA match with a descendant of the John Gilliland who married Charity Richardson.
According to the 1820 census, Allen had two sons. We know that one of them was James. The other son may have been Robert S. Gilliland.

Murphy for $75. The land bordered land of his father, Allen.8 On August 8, 1840, James was appointed "Attorney in Fact" by Mary Davis (who I'm assuming was his mother-in-law) to sell land for her that was located in Hendricks County, Indiana. It was land that was conveyed to her husband Thomas Davis, Sr.9 On December 28, 1840 James purchased 100 acres of land on the Roaring River in Overton County from his father for $500.10 Then on December 15, 1847, James sold two 30 acre tracts of land to Willis Robertson, both on Spring Creek in Overton County, for $200.11
