I. James Egbert (5/20/1759-ca.1824-5) (name also found as Jeremiah) son of John & Martha Egbert, b. Hunterdon, Readington, NJ, d. Seneca Co., OH, m. twice, 1st – ca. 1775, Hunterdon, Readington, NJ, Sarah Smith (3/19/1754-ca.1812) d. in Montove Co., PA, dau. of  John & Mary (Harsel) Smith. (John b. 1/30/1724, Mary b. 8/26/1729) James served in the Rev. War as 2nd Lt. under Capt. Edward Wilmot Jr.’s 3rd Co., Col. John Taylor’s 4th Reg., Hunterdon Co. Militia, elected 2/14/1778, serving from 1775-1780 as infantry vol.  Moved from Readington, NJ ca. 1794 & settled 12 miles from Sunbury, Montour Co., PA. Had res. in NJ, PA, & OH after mil. service. James came to Seneca Co., OH with 2nd wife, whose name is unknown (could be Mary ---). James d. of pneumonia & originally bur. on line between sons’ farms. (1812-13) later Franklin, OH & in 1823 to Seneca Co., OH and soon afterward their father James & 2nd wife joined them. David served in Jesse D. Courtwright's Co., OH Militia, War of 1812.  In War of 1812 list of pensioners David's widow is listed as living in Wood City, OH.

David was 5'10" with dark complexion, gray eyes, black hair. His occ. was as a farmer, enlisted as private in 57th Reg. of Ohio militia under Hiram Henderson's Co. H in 11/1861. Soon after the fighting in the Battle of Shiloh he beame ill with small pox and disrrhea, & discharged. He died from these ailments. David Egbert Sr. was guardian to his son's 3 children after his death.

Ward his teacher, with excellent grades when he was 18 yrs. old  for the term 11/11/1872-3/19/1873. When his first wife, Sarah, became ill Orpha helped care for her. William moved to Washington state in 1888 and sent for Orpha & his family in 1889.  Orpha & family came west to Seattle, Coupeville, by boat & on to La Conner, WA. They lived in a house on N. Hillside off the main st. in LaConner. William became a well-known farmer in Olympia Marsh. member of Woodmen of the World lodge of La Conner, WA.  Most of William & Orpha’s ch. remained in Bow/Allen area of WA. (North of Mt. Vernon) All sons were dairy farmers.
1) Grove Arthur Egbert (5/9/1880-4/3/1963) b. Blue Springs, Gage Co., NE, d. Seattle, King Co., WA, unmar. Grove went to Alaska in the 1898 Gold Rush, went over the Yukon Trail and to Dawson City. He came back with some gold nuggets after some luck panning, but didn't make a fortune. He worked at McKay's Lumber Mill, and helped clear land for his step-mother Orpha after his father's death. He had a team of horsees & helped bring equipment and lumber from Clear Lake and helped Orpha est. a home near Allen, WA.

After her father's death she fed and clothed them, & took them into her home part of the time to help Orpha with her burden.

Baltimore, M, d. at home on Academy St., Cambridge, OH, from a heart condition, dau. of Thomas J. & Hannah (Engle) Slimmer.  She moved to Cambridge in 1934 & was for several years employed by Phillips Paking Co., & at the time of her d. was working for the Rob Roy Co. in Cambridge. She was active in civic affairs, member of Rebekah Lodge, Post Adjutant of the Navy Mothers & member of the VFW Auxillary. Walter was a traveler, & made a trip around the Cape of Good Hope. He worked in Anascortes, WA, and then in a restaurant in Baltimore, MD as a chef. In 1908 he became a citizen of MD and was a clerk at that time.  (See Story Section)

He related in 11/28/1960 a news story, at age 93, he attended school in Tiffin, OH, & wasn’t in high school til yrs. later when his eldest dau. grad. in 1890. His 1st trip west was as a hobo, finding work in KS wheat fields, he did well, but came back to OH State Univ.  After grad. he was called to Idaho to assist in est. of Univ. of Idaho, his work was near the Washington Indian Station. Later, a telegram from Washington offered him a position as superintendent of an Indian School in South Oregon. At one time during his work in the west, he decided to attend Cornell Univ. in Ithaca, NY & while studying scientific agriculture there he was offered a position by a federal comm. in WA to work in the Philippines in the Ed. field, but he declined. He served for a time as Indian Agent at Siletz, Oregon dealing with the Indians of the Modocs, Klamath & Piutes when he was sent to the coast to serve as superintendent. Before Minnie m. Knott she attended the academy in Green Springs and later Western Reserve College, Cleveland, OH & went west to Homestead as a single person. She said homesteaders were given a strip of land one mile long & ½ mile wide & were required to reside on the land for 7 mo. of a year for 9yrs., that his land be improved. She built a cabin 12’x14’ & in time received a deed to the land. She taught school & later taught Indian ch. from the Blackfoot tribe. She related many of her experiences including being a midwife to an Indian woman for her 12th ch. During WWII she was employed in the US Engineers’ office in Dayton, OH operating a teletype machine, but admitted she didn’t care for the clatter of the machine. In 1943 Knott was employed by the US government in the distribution dept. at Wright-Patterson Airfield at Dayton, OH. They both traveled extensively over the yrs. (See Story Section)

Fannie visited his home there some yrs later & found some bricks from the fireplace of their log home & sm. iris, which she brought home. They had moved to MI by the time their dau. Anna was b. 1886. In 1900 they were res. of Eaton Co., NI, Windsor twp., he at 44 a farmer renting a farm. Their farm was located on the Nixon Rd. near corner of Billwood Highway. The house still stood in 1988. 2nd – 2/20/1905, Daniel W. Gittenger, b. ca 1856 in OH, son of D.W. & Jane (Detrow) Gittenger. By 1910, Amanda had dropped name of Gittenger and using Kenney. She and Isaac bur. at Charlotte, where he worked on laying out the roadways to contour with the lay of the land in the cem. So the story goes…a cousin or brother of Amanda’s wanted adventure, so he headed out for San Antonio, TX to hire on for a cattle drive along the Chisholm Trail to Abilene, KS. Along the way (whether he was on the trail or on his way there) he came down with some illness (typhoid or typhus). A good family took him in & nursed him back to health, which took some time in those days. He wrote to let his family back in OH know where he was, but because he was educated & could teach their ch., the family taking care of him never posted the letter. He was too weak, run down  & penniless to strike out on his own. He wrote again & thought his parents had disowned him. Somehow by word of mouth, word got to them & they went west & brought him home to OH. He then decided to further his ed., so he went to Albion, MI and attended the Methodist college there.

According to records he was 5 yrs old at time of parent’s m. & came to MI with Amanda & Isaac & lived on Nixon Rd. just south of them, raising mint on his ‘muck’ land. He worked for his father-in-law as a farm laborer before & after m. to Helen Harmon (6/1881-3/30/1947) b. MI, dau. of Fred (5/1854-4/5/1925) & Alma Harmon. After the d. of Helen’s parents, they took over the farm & later built a new house. They were hardworking, nice people.

He worked for the Lansing City Light Co., & at dinnertime he would eat his dessert first. She would feed the hobos at her back door during the Depression. These people had a way of marking a home that would feed them & in this way they knew they were welcome to come to the back door for food. Dorothy & Ellenora Lamphere stayed overnight at their house & she had just cooked Ellenora’s breakfast & set it down in front of her when a hobo came to the door. She gave the breakfast to the hobo. The girls had never seen a hobo before, let alone fed one. When they stayed the night they could hear the lions at the Potter Park Zoo roar & then in the morning the milkman clanking mild bottles and his horse clopping down the street.

6. Elizabeth Egbert (Lida) (5/20/1826-12/3/1901) d. Melrose, Monroe Co., IA, m. 4/9/1846, Seneca CO., OH, William Bernard, (12/17/1823-1/16/1908) b. Frederick Co., Maryland, d. Chariton, IA, at age 17 he moved to Seneca Co., OH.  He served in Civil War.  8 children, 7 boys, and 1 daughter, one dying in infancy.  In 1855 they moved to Monroe Co. IA, practicing law for a number of yrs. He was stricken with paralysis in 9/1905 and for his last 6 months he was entirely helpless.  After Elizabeth's death, he remarried, though the date given is 10/15/1892,  (9 yrs before Eliz.'s listed death date) at Albia.  There were only 2 of his children in the vicinity when he died, Charles and William Jr., the rest  said to have scattered over the western states.  His funeral was held 1/17/1908 at the M.E. Church in Albia and buried in the North Cemetery.

a. Roscoe Litchfield Carle (5/20/1863-1935) occ. newspaper reporter. Later on, in 11/1902, he became lessee & eventually owner of the daily newspaper, “The Times,” which was founded in 1875. He was involved in the Spanish-American War. On 6/24/1892, a Co. of OH Nat. Guard Inf. was organized at Tiffin, OH, with Capt. Roscoe Carle in command. The Co. mustered into the state service as Co. e, 2nd Reg., OH Nat. Guard, called into active service to assist quelling the riot at Wheeling Creeek for 12 days in 1894, & for 4 days service in Tiffin in 1895, 1902-4 Roscoe Carle was the state rep. from Seneca Co.
