William & Rebecca (Job) Egbert Family

I. William Egbert (10/16/1753-1840)  c. 10/16/1753, Prot. Epis. Church of Shrewsbury, near Cranbury, Monmouth Co, NJ. d. 1840, Sandy Lake twp., Mercer Co., PA, son of John & Margaret (Garretson) Egbert, m. 1776, Rebecca (Elizabeth) Job (1756-1816) of Jobtown & South Amboy, Monmouth Co, NJ, dau. of George & Elizabeth (James) Job & sister of Robert & Peter Job, who both went, with families, to W. PA with William & his family. Said so have been severely wounded at the Battle of Brandywine and captured, taken to Halifaz, where after a time he was permitted to return home. During his absence, or shortly after his reurn, one of his brothers married a Tory lady,  and a lasting estrangement was created between the families. Record of receipt by him of $290 Continental on Certif. #165, 10/1779-1/1787, rec’d. pension as Rev. trooper pvt. & was an unusually good horseman even in old age (at 84 he mounted & broke a colt). They res. in Cranbury a number of yrs. when they joined a group of NJ residents & moved to SW PA, called then the New Jersey Settlement. Rebecca’s brother, Peter, having deed of 6/24/1793, area later called Elizabeth, was at forks of the Monogahela & Youghicheny rivers. William’s deed of 1793 at Elizabeth, PA is in files of Quartermaster Gen. Dept., Trenton. “The Forks” was one of the earliest & most populous. Move to the farm in Mercer Co. was not by chance. The Perrine family had previously come there (prior to 1780) & William Pangborn, foather of Stephen, was there in 1788 but went back to the forks later on. With the urging of some of these, William bought land from the North American Land Co., 2 or 3 miles from the Perrine settlement in 1800, a large farm well located & productive. He wasn’t a tall man but active & wiry with a peppery temper. He had a powder burn scar on his face from the Rev. War that remained the rest of his life. He was the first blacksmith, tanner, and shoemaker in Mercer Co. with his farm. The land was given to his son, Lewis, ca 1819, when Lewis m., on condition he should have the use of a room as long as he lived. W.H. Clawson, Lewis’ son-in-law, later owned the land that was still in the family in 1910. both bur.
