I. Jan DeWitt, from Grootholt, in Sunderlant in the land of Overmaas under jurisdiction of Beek. Captain of the ship “Little Fox” who, with 18 others, masters and owners of vessels, were chartered as a company by the State-General of Holland in 1614. Jan was a navigator. Member of the first West India Trading Co., trading with New Netherlands

C.Tjerck Claeszen DeWitt (Claes) (1620-2/17/1700) came from Holland in 1650, probably first of his family to come to New Amsterdam, and soon settled in Kingston, NY. Earliest information in “Trouw Boeck” or the register of marriages of the DRC in city of New Amsterdam where recorded his m. 4/24/1656, Barbara Andrieszen, from Amsterdam, d. 7/6/1714. Res. in New Amsterdam til b. of eldest son, Andries, 1657, when he moved to Miltwyck, remaining there til his d. The place was well fortified, and he helped defend the village at the time of the Indian attack in 1663. His daughter was taken captive (Jannetje) & recovered. He was one of the magistrates. In 1669 obtained liberty to erect house and barn on his land outside of Wiltwyck. He was a navigator & owned a sloop of 50 ft. keel. Both a trader and farmer with some rank among the original settlers. In 1689 he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the British crown, as did many others, because the British authorities had not fulfilled their treaty stipulations on the country being surrendered to them, and he did not acknowledge that power during his lifetime.1. For some yrs. he res. at Marbletown, Ulster Co., NY on a farm given to him by his father, but removed to Kingston prior to 1708. Settled at Whiteport, Ulster Co., NY. In History of Ulster Co it stated he settled in Hurley where he built a stone house which still stood & could still be seen in 1880. Andries became Capt. Petrus was one of the earliest settlers in the Pawling Patent having located on the south half of Lot #3, which he named Wittemount. After selling Wittemount to Brockholst Levingston, he removed to Lot #9, which he named Rockdale & erected a large house east of the road (torn down in 1867 by Wm. Dinsmore) Petrus purchased May, 1761 of Francis Van Dyke Jr. land in the Great Nine Partner, this being a portion of the land that Francis Van Dyke Jr. purchased of the trustees of the Great Nine Partners on 9/9/1742, on this land in 1775 he erected his famous mill known as DeWitt’s Mill (afterwards as LeRoys & then Frost Mill).a) John DeWitt (2/24/1752-4/28/1808) d. at Newberg, m. k. Egbert B. DeWitt (said to be 7th ch. & 4th son) (3/18/1699-7/13/1761) d. Napanoch, Rochester, Ulster Co., NY, will of 7/13/1758, proven 5/7/1761. He was settled by his father at Napanoch, (first settler there) on the site later owned by Averill Hungerford. It is said his father, on parting with Egbert after settling him on this tract of land, shed tears for fear he would not be able to get a living in the wilderness. m. 11/4/1726, Maria Nottingham, g’dau. of Jacob Rutzen. 10 ch., believed that all but the youngest ch. were c. in Kingston, NY. 1734 his house referred to in a statute as then in the town of Rochester. 1738 he was on the list of troopers.
