Thomas’ parents dying when he was about eight years of age, he was cared for by his older brother, Mark C., who by the aid of kind friends kept the family of eight children together in their Vermont home until the winter of 1815 he sought a home in the wilds of western New York, accompanied by Thomas and his three sisters, one having died after the death of her parents, and the two younger children remaining with friends in Vermont. They first settled in Centreville, Alleghany Co., N. Y., on a hill farm, which in later years was owned by Gregory Metcalf. Thomas later engaged in mercantile business, first in Freedom and later in Sandusky, a village of that town, pursuing this business for some years, when he turned his attention to farming as a source of better health. He was educated in the common schools and academies of that place, and in Springville School, having a strong desire for an education, which had to be given up on account of failing health. In 1862, having buried their two children in one short week, their home was for a time broken up, and not until Feb. 28, 1866, did they again set up a permanent home, and then in Rushford, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. Amelia Lewis, was the daughter of Nathan and Sally Lewis of Sandusky, NY.
We are indebted to him for this branch of the family. His great grandfather, Elisha White, having left Lancaster, in 1783. We had been unable to obtain anything later than the baptism of his children, in 1899. I received a letter from Mr. White, in which he gave me his ancestry, making a connection between his work and mine, for he was trying to trace ancestry. Though in poor health, and a part of the time suffering from a severe inflammation of the eyes, yet he worked persistently until he had interested others and completed the work. I am very glad he could have and enjoy the first volume of my work. He d. in his home in Rushford, Apr. 8. 1901.
