Date of Will 4th December 1856.
To my Son, John BAILEY all and every part of that Estate called or known by the name of Bowes Croft in the County of York.
To my Daughter, Margaret BAILEY that field or parcel of land being in the Parish of Brough in the County of Westmorland and also the sum of Six hundred pounds of good and lawful money.
To my Wife, Mary BAILEY during her natural life, the sum of twenty pounds to be paid yearly and every year out of my Estate called or known by the name of Bowes Croft lying in the Parish of Bowes in the County of York, aforesaid such payment to be made half-yearly at Whitsuntide and Martinmas in each year.
I give and bequeath all my furniture, plate silver china Glass, Books and other household effects unto my said Wife Mary BAILEY for her natural life and after her decease I bequeath the silver to my Son and Daughter to be equally divided between them.
As to the residue of my personal Estate I give and bequeath the same to my Wife and Son Equally between them, whom I nominate, constitute and appoint Executrix and Executor of this my last Will and Testament.

Date of Will 18th February 1875.
This is the last Will and Testament of me Mary BAILEY of Kirkby Stephen in the County of Westmorland Widow.
I bequeath to my daughter Margaret the Wife of William HUTCHINSON of Rookby Scarth Yeoman for her sole and separate use during her life the Income of Three hundred pounds Darlington D Preferential five and a half percent Stock of the North Eastern Railway Company now standing in my name and after her decease I bequeath the same Stock with the annual Income thereof unto and equally amongst the children of my said daughter Margaret share and share alike.
I bequeath to my daughter in Law Agnes the Wife of my Son John Gill BAILEY for her Sole and separate use during her life the Income of Three hundred forty five pounds Darlington D Preferential five and a half percent Stock of the North Eastern Railway Company and after her decease I bequeath the same Stock with the annual income thereof unto and equally amongst the children of my said daughter in Law Agnes by my said Son John Gill Bailey share and share alike.
I give devise and bequeath all my real Estate and residuary personal Estate if any belonging to me at my decease to my Son John Gill BAILEY absolutely. I also give and devise to him all Estates if any vested in me as Trustee or Mortgagee subject to the Trusts and Equities affecting the same[?].
I appoint my said Son John Gill BAILEY Sole Executor of this my Will and declare that such of the provisions of the Trustees and Mortgagees Act as may be applicable to the Trusts of this my Will shall operate and take effect as if the same had been fully and at length set out herein and I declare this to be my last and only Will. In witness whereof I have signed my name at the foot of this my Will this eighteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy five---------

I give to Elizabeth BARROW my wife all my messuages, tenements and lands with all their appurtenances at Loughrigg during her widowhood.
After my wife�s widow right I give all my messuages tenements and lands with all their rights and appurtenances at Loughrigg and elsewhere both freehold and customary, to Reginald BRATHWAIT of Loughrigg, yeoman, John SIMPSON of Flookburgh County of Lancaster, yeoman and Henry BARROW my son at Braithwaite in Cumberland, yeoman and Robert BRATHWAIT of Skelethwait in Lancaster yeoman upon special trust that they employ all profits therefrom for the education and bringing up of Henry BARROW my grandson son of William BARROW my son late deceased until he accomplish and come to the full age of 21 and any left over after his maintenance and their own charges and expenses to be employed for the maintenance and bringing up of my granddaughters Jane BARROW and Margaret BARROW until their said brother Henry BARROW attain to the full age of 21 years.
And after that my trustees shall convey the said messuage, tenement and lands to the said Henry BARROW my grandson. In case my said grandson Henry BARROW shall die before he reaches 21 years it is my will that if my grandson John BARROW son of Henry BARROW my son shall within in six months next after he accomplish the full age of 21 years pay to my granddaughters Jane BARROW and Margaret BARROW twenty pounds each and if one be dead then the other to have her share and if neither be living it shall be equally divided amongst my son in law Edward BENSON�s daughters.
I give to my granddaughters Jane BARROW and Margaret BARROW ten pounds each to be kept in the trustees hands to pay the yearly interest for their maintenance till they come to lawful age and then upon payment of the 10 pounds by my grandson John BARROW my trustees shall convey the said messuage tenements and lands to my said grandson John BARROW.
I give to my son in law Edward BENSON in full satisfaction of his child�s portion twenty shillings.
I give unto my wife�s four sons twenty shillings each.
I give to John UDALL ten shillings and to his wife five shillings.
I give to George BENSON my godson 2s 6d.
I give to my grandson Henry BARROW one brass pot, brass doubler, all tables, all bed stock all iron goods whatsoever cupboard, arks and chests, chairs and forms all things within the kiln.
I give to the trustees two shillings each
I give to my granddaughter Hester BARROW five pounds.
I give 10 pounds to the poor of Loughrigg the interest to be paid yearly by the overseer and church warden.

To my neighbour and relation Christopher ROBERTS of Ellers in Loughrigg all my messuage tenement with all the lands, grounds and closes, inclosures or parcels of land etc lying and being at Oaks or elsewhere in Loughrigg upon special trust and confidence reposed in him to raise money by sale of the said lands or parts thereof to pay all such debts as I shall justly owe at the time of my decease including all his charges and expenses in regarding the execution and trust of this will.
I will, devise and order that my dear and loving wife Mary shall on request of Christopher ROBERTS release her customary dower and widow right to the said Christopher ROBERTS upon the trust specified in this will, otherwise she shall not have any benefit whatsoever by virtue of this will.
The yearly rents, issues and profits from the said messuage, land tenements etc to be used by my wife for the maintenance of herself and my son John BARROW as long as she continue to be my chaste widow.
Any money that arise from falls of wood the said premises shall be paid at the discretion of Christopher ROBERTS toward the better support and maintenance of my wife and son.
All my goods, chattels, stock of sheep, household goods and personal estate whatsoever I give to my wife for her sole and separate use.
My executrix to be my said wife, she paying the expenses of my funeral and charges of probate of this will. If she refuse to execute my will then the legacies to her are forfeit and go to Christopher ROBERTS to be used by him in the discharge of my said debts, funeral expenses and probate fees and he becomes the sole executor of my will.
All my said messuage and tenement lands and premises as well as leasehold and customary properties with their appurtenances I give to my said son.

The Testator Joseph BAYLEY was late of Casterton in the parish of Kirkby Lonsdale in the County of Westmorland yeoman and died on the twenty seventh day of October 1869
Decease ?? and bequeath unto my friends Joseph Airey Dawson of Kirkby Lonsdale, hotel keeper and George Banks in the County of Lancashire, farmer, all my money and securities for money personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever freehold to them their executors and administrators. Upon f� to get in any money owing to me at the time of my decease and there outpay my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses and stand possessed of the clear residue thereof. Upon ?? to invest the same in their names upon Governmental or a good personal security and receive the interest dividends and annual income. ??? to outpay to my said sister Mary ?? DODGSON the annuity or annual sum of Fourteen (?) pounds during her life to be paid to her half yearly the first payment to become due and be made at the end of six months after my decease. And to stand possessed of the residue ?? interest and dividends and annual income. This is the last will and testament of me Nicholas Bayley of Casterton in the Parish of Kirkby Lonsdale in the county of Westmorland, Yoeman. First I order and direct all my just debts funeral and testamentary expences to be paid by my executors hereinafter named and appointed. Then I give devise and bequeath all that my freehold estate _____ at Casterton aforesaid and also all other my real and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever (except the clock which was presented to my by the Township of Casterton aforesaid, which I hereby give and bequeath to my son James Bayley) unto my brother Joseph Bayley of Casterton aforesaid yeoman and George Banks of Gale within the township of Burrow in the county of Lancaster, farmer, their heirs executors __________ and assigns upon trust to get all the debts due home and convert all my personal estate except aforesaid into money and let or lease my real estate and receive the rents of the real he interest of the personal estate (which I hereby direct them to invest in such manner and on such security as to them shall seem most beneficial) from time to time as the same becomes due and payable and after deducting the costs and expenses of the necessary spans (?) of my same real estate pay the same half yearly unto my dear wife Mary until my son James Bailey shall have attained the age of fourteen years, and from and immediately after the happening of the last mentioned event upon invest to pay unto my said wife during her natural life an annuity of ten pounds sterling for annum, half yearly and to receive and accumulate the residue of such rent, and income and stand possessed of such or accumulations. Upon the invest hereinafter mentioned that is to say upon trust to let the same rents and income accumulate by way of compound interest until my said son James shall attain the age of twenty five years. And then upon trust to convey grant and apine the said real estate unto my said son James his heirs and ________ (subject to the proviso or power of suntgaying (?) and charging the same real estate hereinafter contained) and upon further invest to pay out of the said accumulations, or if they be insufficient then out of the funds or money to be realised _______ real estate by virtue of the power hereinafter given, unto all and each of my other children now living or to be born in due time after my decease, the several and respective sums of one hundred pounds sterling each provided always and I ______ expressly declare that in case my said wife shall marry again or shall have or bear a child by any other man, then and on happening of either of those events all bequests and interest given or provided for her by this my will shall cease and determine to all interests and purposes and on her decease, or marriage again, or of her bearing a child by any other man I hereby give and bequeath to each of my said children now living or to be born alive in due time after my decease (except for my son James) the further and additional sum of one hundred pounds sterling each to be paid to them on them respectively attaining the age of twenty five years provide always further and I direct and empower my trustees for the time being if they or he shall deam it advisable to rebuild my present homestead and out buildings at Casterton aforesaid or either of them and to expend such a sum of money thereon as to them shall seem expedient or necessary and I further declare and direct that in case from any cause whatever the said accumulations of rent and income shall be insufficient to meet such sum or seems to be expended in such rebuilding as aforesaid or if raising and satisfying the said several sums or legacies hereinbefore given, as the case may be I do hereby empower and direct my son trustees and trustee for the time being to charge and raise by way of mortgage or other? Over my real estate such a ___ or ___ of money as will enable them and him to meet and pay any deficiency thereof. I bequeath my dwelling house known as Strawberry Bank and fields adjoining to my trustees upon trust to allow Helen FALLON to have the use and enjoyment thereof during her life and after her death for her son Michael Harry FALLON for his own use.

All within the manor of Warcop with their appurtenances to hold the same in effect to him the said Barnabas Bland his heirs and assigns for ever.
I give to my daughter Catherine BELL wife of Robert BELL the sum of twenty pounds.
I give to my Grand daughter Margaret THOMPSON twenty pounds.
I give to my Grandson William BLAND the sum of twenty pounds.
I give to my grand daughter Mary BLAND otherwise JOHNSTONE if living the sum of twenty pounds to be paid to herself and no way under the control of her husband, if dead to be divided amongst her children then living within six months after my decease Share and Share alike.
All the rest and remainder of my person estate of what kind or nature source, I give to my son Barnabas BLAND who I do hereby make, nominate constitute and appoint my whole and sole Executor. Willing and requesting him to pay all the legacies above mentioned within six months of my decease my just debts and funeral expenses.

Immediately after the decease of my wife, I give all the aforesaid premises to my grandchildren, John and Thomas CLEASBY.
I further order that after the death of my wife the above premises shall be sold, and the money arising be divided equally between John and Thomas CLEASBY first paying a legacy of one hundred pounds to my granddaughters Agnes CLEASBY and Christable CLEASBY to be equally divided between them.
To my son in law John CLEASBY ten pounds, and to my grandson Bowness CLEASBY ten pounds, both to be paid out of the personal property twelve months after the decease of my wife.

I give & dispose of the guardianship and tuition of my four youngest children during their minority to John WHITEHEAD, Leonard BOWNESS, George BOWNESS and Robert BOWNESS, authorising and empowering them to let to farm all or any part of the premises devised to my said four youngest grandchildren, and to expend the money thence arising according to the discretion of the said tutors and guardians in the maintenance and education of my four said grandchildren according as exigencies may require.
I do hereby order that the accounts of the guardianship be inspected yearly by Jeffery BOWNESS, or Thomas REDMAN, and if approved by him or them shall undergo no further examination.
I further order that if any of my said grandchildren die before they have received their respective legacies, and leave issue such issue shall be entitled to the father or mother�s share, but if no issue be left the property shall be shared among all my surviving grandchildren. I further order that if any of my grandchildren be not content with the legacies bequeathed to them by virtue of my Will, and prove refractory so that the rest or any of the legatees cannot procure their just shares without trouble and expense, that he, she or they shall for so doing forfeit their legacy or legacies and that the same be divided equally among the other legatees who are not refractory. The whole of my freehold furniture except the plates, dishes and other articles of pewter to my daughter Isabel WHITESIDE. All the rest to my son George BOWNESS, Rector of Rokeby, to my son-in-law George BOWNESS of Sunbegin, Yeoman, and to William BURRA of Raisbeck, Yeoman, on the following trusts.
I direct that they sell my freehold estate at Raisbeck with my stock and crops intact by public auction. From the proceeds I direct that all my expenses be paid. To my daughter Elizabeth BOWNESS two hundred and fifty pounds, which sum I direct to be under the management of my trustees for her benefit. If she die without issue, any residue shall be divided among her brothers and sisters or their descendants.
To my son Thomas BOWNESS I bequeath the interest of three hundred pounds during his life to be paid to him by my trustees, and I direct that the three hundred pounds be equally divided at his decease among his children or their descendants.
To my daughter Mary ROBERTSON I bequeath the interest of two hundred and five pounds during her life to be paid to her by my trustees, and at her decease the two hundred and five pounds be divided in equal shares among her children or their descendants.

In case of any surplus my three trustees giving yearly the interest to my children or their descendants who may be judged by them to be most needful and deserving according to trustees� judgment and discretion. At the expiration of seven years after my decease any surplus shall be divided in equal shares among my sons Thomas and William and my three married daughters or their descendants they being judged most necessitous and deserving.
In case of the death of one of my aforesaid trustees the two survivors shall immediately proceed to choose any reputable and respectable person in the neighbourhood as a third trustee. I also direct that the above sums of money in trust be made to bear interest and the said legacies be paid as soon after the sales of my estate and effects as it can be conveniently done.
In case of any misunderstanding among my said trustees or legatees such dispute or disagreement shall be referred to the Reverend Thomas MOSS, Master of the Grammar School of Orton and John DODD of Raisbeck, Yeoman, and that their decision shall be final. If either of the said referees should happen to die I direct that the survivor shall immediately proceed to choose another respectable person in the neighbourhood. I appoint my son George BOWNESS and my son in law George BOWNESS joint Executors.

To my two Sons John and Anthony BUCK the sum or Legacy of One hundred and twenty pounds sterling to be divided between them share and share alike....Unto my Son Richard LANGLEY ...Twenty Five pounds....Unto Jane LANGLEY Senr of Sleagill Head...Thirty pounds and also one Bedstead Bed and Bedding as now standing in the Parlour...I also give...unto Jane LANGLEY Senr the interest of the share...bequeathed unto Jane LANGLEY Junr of Sleagill aforesaid until she attain the age of Twnety one years, the said interest to be paid to Jane LANGLEY Senr...at the rate of Four and one half percent per annum . And lastly I give and bequeath unto my Sons and Daughter, the whole of my Farming Stock Crop Implements of Husbandry Threshing Machine and Dairy Utensils which I ..direct to be sold by Public Auction as soon as convenient ..in the course of Twelve months after my decease...the proceeds thereof after... She came into service in her teens, when (or before) Richard's wife Elizabeth HARRISON died shortly after the birth of Richard and Elizabeth's fourth child (1829). Jane LANGLEY's relationship to Richard BUCK was shown as "servant" on all census, although the BUCK brothers showed her as "mother" in the 1871 census. Richard BUCK and Jane LANGLEY lived together for more than forty years
