In looking at bio for Pfc Richard E Behm, I recently had an
opportunity to update the information for the Freeland Vets Memorial and
found that "Uncle Dick" was actually killed on September 18,
1944 on Angaur Island, Palau Group, not Peleliu Island as erroneously
reported in the News at that time. We were told that Dick was killed by
misdirected friendly fire shortly after having silencing an enemy
machine gun nest. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star in
addition to the Purple Heart. Respectively, George Baumann
