Killed in battle: Official word has come to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wenzel
of Freeland RD 3, that their only child, Pfc. Walter Wesley Wenzel was
killed in action March 28 in Germany. The 21-year-old soldier
was a member of Company F, 187th Infantry. He was drafted at
Camp Blanding, Fla., and went overseas in December.
Pfc. Wenzel was born in Saginaw Dec. 2, 1923, and resided here until 1938, when the family moved to a farm near Freeland. He was confirmed at St. James' Lutheran church. He was graduated from Arthur Hill High school in 1942, and worked with his father on the farm until inducted into the service.
