Mercy Goffe (53)

Mercy Goffe (53) was born before 1801 in Ireland, a daughter of John Goffe (49) and Jane Gregston (50). John and Jane Goffe, with Mercy and her brother William (51), left Ireland for the United States on 1 June 1801 aboard the Good Ship Albicore.

There was a lot of sickness on board the ship on the passage. Perhaps as a result of this, Mercy died at sea. Her body was placed in a chest with sealed empty bottles to make it float. Her name was inscribed on the lid and the chest was committed to the ocean. Upon arriving in the United States, the family discovered from an item in a newspaper that the chest containing Mercy had been found at sea by some fishermen, who had it interred in a graveyard. Where she is buried is not known today.
