When Orry was eight years of age, the family moved to Cochranton, Crawford county. In May 1857, nearly 21, he went to Mendotta, Illinois where he engaged in farming. In September 1857 he went to Kingston, Lyme County, Iowa where he was also engaged in farming. He returned to Lamoille, Ill., in 1860, and enlisted in that town, September 17, 1861 in Captain E.A. Orry's first battle experience was at Shiloh, April 6 and 7 1862. This was followed by the siege of Corinth, May 1862, and the battles of Bear Creek and Iuka in April 1863. Orry first had an attack of pain in his head, side and shoulder blade at Corinth on 10 February 1863, suffering also from loss of appetite, shortness of breath and a suffocating feeling. A pain developed in his left eye in April 1863 developing into a cataract about June of that year. At the beginning of September 1863, Orry was sent to a hospital in Memphis, TN and in November to Benton Barracks Hospital in St. Louis, MO. In January 1864, he was transferred to Lawson Hospital in St. Louis. In March 1864, Orry was transferred to the Twenty-fourth Veteran Reserve regiment, stationed at Washington, D.C. He received a furlough in mid May, returning to Plumer, Venango County, PA. He returned to the 24th on 10 July 1864, and after about three weeks was assigned to the regimental hospital at Washington. He was discharged there on 22 November 1864.

Orry came to Venango County, Pennsylvania in February 1865, settling at Plumer. On May 16 of that year, at Meadeville, he married Isabel E. Hill (225), of Cochranton, Crawford County, PA. Orry and Isabel together had six children: Sylvester W. (278), born 21 December 1866; Timothy Chapin (266), born 1 September 1868; Charles H. (267), born 23 December 1869; Albertus M. (268), born 28 April 1875; Myrtle V. (261), born 10 July 1881; and Arthur (260), birth date unknown.

The family lived in Plumer for about five years, then moved from there to Shamburg in the spring of 1870. Orry and his family moved to Sutton, Clay County, Nebraska in November, 1873. While there, his health declined further. On 9 April 1877, the Turner's moved back to Petroleum Center, PA. On January 1879, they moved to Oil City, PA. For 36 years, until his death, he lived on Pine street and for 35 years of this time was in the insurance business. For about 10 years he was in the grocery business on the south side, being affiliated with insurance work at the same time.

Orry was one of the original members of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oil City. He was also a member of the Rutherford B. Hayes Post of the G.A.R.
