James Montgomery Hill (380) and Jennie Dilley (419)

James Montgomery Hill (380) was born 9 December 1843 on the Hill homestead, Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He is a son of Samuel Hill (374) and Margaret Montgomery (378).

James enlisted for three years in Company H, 150th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers (Bucktails) and was mustered into service on 28 August 1862. He received flesh wounds at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was promoted to Corporal 5 May 1865, and was mustered out 23 June 1865.

He returned to Fairfield Township but later moved to New Vernon Township, Mercer County, PA, with his brother William (422), where he bought the old Montgomery farm. Here, he met Jennie Dilley (419), the daughter of David Dilley (557), who had also served in the Union Army.

On 9 June 1892, he married Jennie Dillie (419). Jennie was born 7 November 1871 in Mill Creek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of David Dilley (557) and Emiline (750).

Together, James and Jennie had five children: Prudence (535), born 23 April 1893, married W.H. Swartz (577); James Troy (536), born 15 June 1894 and died 25 December 1970; David Leon (537), born 21 November 1898; Grace (538), born 26 May 1896, married Luther Stone (572); and Milo Victor (539), born 28 June 1900.

James retired from the farm in 1921, and he and Jennie moved to Mercer, where he died 28 December 1928. Jennie died 8 December 1965. They are buried together in Oak Hill Cemetery, east of Sandy Lake in Mercer County, PA.
