Archibald and James voluntered in August 1862 in Company H, One Hundred and Fiftieth Regiment (Bucktails), Pennsylvania Volunteers. James was wounded in the Gettysburg Campaign. Archibald died 5 September 1863 at Rappahannock Station (now Remington), Virginia, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. James received only flesh wounds and survived the war.
