Sarah Montgomery (84) was born in 1809, probably in Mercer County, PA. She is the daughter of James Montgomery (212) and Sarah Fulton (213). Captain James Montgomery was a prominent citizen in Mercer County, having served during the War of 1812, and also as a member of the Pennsylvania legislature.

Sarah married Timothy F. Hill (83) on 1 November 1827. They were married in Mercer County, Pennsylvania by Rev. Isaac Biggs. Timothy is a son of Archibald Hill (210) and Mary Fulton (211). Sarah's sister, Margaret Montgomery (376) married Timothy's brother, Samuel Hill (374). Timothy Hill was a farmer in Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, not far from the Montgomery farm in New Vernon Township in Mercer County. Timothy and Samuel shared the farm carved out of the wilderness by their father.

Family oral history claims that Timothy and Sarah together had eighteen children. From census and other records including notes by Mary, their oldest child, it is possible to verify that there were, in fact, eighteen children, and to identify seventeen names. These include Mary (511), born 12 Dec 1827; Sarah (362), born about 1830; Archibald (425), born 22 December 1831; Margaret (527), born about 1834; Esther (375), born about 1836; James (429), born about 1839; Elizabeth (428), born about 1839; John (424), born Sep 1842; Isabella (225), born 1 August 1843; Georgiana (377), born 3 August 1849; Emma (387), born about 1851 (Emma died at the age of 16); William Bates (158), born 12 October 1852; twin boys, Charles Alexander Montgomery (38) and Joseph Merriman (271), born 18 March 1854; and Arthur (157), born about 1856. Other children included Samuel, who died at age three, and an infant son who died whose name is unknown. Dates of birth for these are not known. The 1840 census shows four girls and two boys. Timothy and family do not appear on the 1850 census.

Two sons, Archibald and John, and a future son-in-law, Orrie Turner (258), fought in the Civil War. Archibald was a member of the 12th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. John and Orrie were members of the 52nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Both of these units took part in some of the fiercest fighting of the western campaigns, including Shiloh.

Timothy Hill died a bankrupt in Mercer County, Pennsylvania on 28 June 1883. After Timothy's death, Sarah may have lived for a time with her daughter, Mary Hill Turner (511), in Corry, PA. Later, she lived with her youngest son, Arthur (157) in Meadville, PA. In July 1893, she claimed to be a resident of Deer Creek Township, Mercer County, PA, where Arthur lived.

Sarah died 9 February 1894 at the age of 85 years, and is buried with Timothy in Conneaut Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
