Biography of Fortunatus Traveller (1810-1865)

Fortunatus Traveller was born 12 August 1810 in London and baptized there on 8 October of the same year in the Parish Church of St. Marylebone, St. Marylebone Road.[1]. In the 1820s he moved with the rest of the family to Philadelphia and then to Bytown (Ottawa), Canada. Upon reaching adulthood he married Mary Dow, and they kept a farm in Nepean Township, Carleton County. The couple had seven daughters in rather quick succession. When the youngest, Caroline, was only twelve, Fortunatus died, on 29 January 1865--just four years after serving as executor for his own father's estate.[2]

   Matilda married James Leithead, son of Robert Leithead and Jessie Knox, on 21 Mar 1882 in Nepean, Carleton Co., Ontario. The marriage was performed by Rev. J.A. Stewart and the witnesses were Francis McCullough of Cumberland and Samuel Billings of Billings Bridge. The bride claimed to be 29. She was a Methodist.
