To the right are the tools used by my g-grandmother when she performed the duties of a midwife. They were in a small leather carrying case. There was also a reddish-colored rubbery item (thing??) that reminded me of a super thick rubber band, or perhaps the rubber-like piece you might see on a stethoscope. Over the many years, it became brittle and broke into pieces. It may have been used to tie off the umbilical cord, or maybe it was used as a tourniquet to stop bleeding. Or perhaps it really was part of a stethoscope...but if so, the rest of it was missing. |
