LLANVIHANGEL - near - USK, or (Llanvihangel Gobion) is a parish and village, on the road from Monmouth to Abergavenny and from Abergavenny to Usk, and bounded on the south by the river Usk, 2 miles southeast from Penpergwm railway station on the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford section of the Great Western railway, 5 south-east from Abergavenny, 6 north-west from Usk and 9 north-east from Pontypool, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and connty court district of Abergavenny, rural deanery of Raglan, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. Michael is a small building of stone in the Elizabethan style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: there are 120 sittings.

In the churchyard, nearly covered by grass, is the upper slab of a coped tombstone, on which the carved outline of a pastoral staff can be faintly traced. The register dates from theyear 1751. The living is a rectory, with Llansantffraed annexed, joint net yearly value �44, in the gift of Sir Arthur John Fludyer, baronet, and Col. Ivor J. E. Herhert, C.B., C.M.G., alternately, and held since 1900 by the Rev. John Rees, L.Th., of Durham University. There is a chapel for Calvinistic Methodists. Charities producing about �20 yearly are distributed in money.

Sir Arthur John Fludyer, bart., of Ayston Hall, Uppingham, who is lord of the manor, and William Reginald J. F. Herbert esq. of Clytha Park, are the principal landowners.

The soil is gravelly; subsoil, sandy. The chief crops are wheat, turnips, oats and barley. The area is 377 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, �633. The population in 1891 was 105.
