BASSALEG is a parish on the Ebbw Vawr river, 162 miles from London, 2� west from Newport, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Wentloog, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newport, and in the rural deanery of Newport, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The Monmouthshire canal runs through the parish and, the Great Western and Brecon and Merthyr railways form a junction here. There are four railway stations in the parish; two at Bassaleg, Rhiwderin station and Tydee station.

The church of St. Basil, standing on an eminence, is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: in 1879 the church was re-seated and restored at a cost of �1,349, and now affords 400 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1768 ; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, �215, with residence and1� acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1898 by the Rev. David Bowen B.A. of St. David's College, Lampeter, surrogate. There are Baptist, Congregational and Wesleyan chapels at Bassaleg, Baptist, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels at Tydee and a Congregational chapel at Rhiwderin. The charities, amounting to about �21 10s. yearly, are distributed in bread, money and kind.

On an eminence about a mile from the village, is a circular entrenchment, supposed to have been a Saxon camp, about a mile from which is another earthwork called Pen-y-park, Newydd.

Tredegar Park is the seat of the Right Hon. Lord Tredegar, Lord Lieutenant, lord of the manor and principal landowner.

The soil is clay and sand ; subsoil, limestone and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, and a little pasturage. The area of the entire parish is 6,855 acres of land, 90 of water and 42 of foreshore. The rateable value is �27,696 and the population in 1891 was 3,851.

DUFFRYN is a hamlet 1 mile south. The area is 1,993 acres of land, 29 of water, 9 of foreshore and 42 of tidal water; rateable value, �5,253; the population in 1891 was 269.
GRAIG is a hamlet three-quarters of a mile west. The area is 2,605 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, �4,607; the population in 1891 was 1,193.
ROGERSTONE is a hamlet, including the village of TYDEE, 1� miles north-west, with a station on the Western Valleys section of the Great Western railway; population in 1891, 2,389.
The church of St. John, a chapel of ease to St. Basil, Bassaleg, erected in 1888, at a cost of �2,370, is an edifice of blue stone with Bath stone dressings in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: there are 310 sittings. The Catholic chapel of SS. Basil and Gwladys is a Gothic structure of stone, opened in Oct. 1892, and has about 150 sittings. Here are the remains of an ancient castle. The area is 2,257 acres of land and 42 of water; rateable value, �17,636 ; the population in 1891 was 2,389.
