ABERCARN is a large village, formed into a civil parish from Mynyddyslwyn, and has a station on the Western Valleys line of the Great Western railway, 10 miles north-west from Newport. It is in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Wentloog, petty sessional division of Bedwellty, union and county court district of Newport, rural deanery of Bedwellty, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff. The parish is governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members, formed December, 1894, under the provisions of the "Local Government Act, 1894" (56 and 57 Vict. ch. 73), and ecclesiastically annexed to Mynyddyslwyn. St. Luke's iron church, erected in 1890, has 500 sittings; there are also English and Welsh Baptist, Primitive Methodist, Calvinistic Methodists, Welsh Congregational and Presbyterian chapels. Here are collieries, iron works, tinplate rnanufactories and chemical works. The area is 9,938 acres ; rateable value, �47,883. The population in 1891 was 10,464.
