BETTWS
BETTWS is a parish, on the west of the road from Newport to Pontypool, 1 mile from Malpas, 2� Miles north-west-by-west from Newport railway stations on the Great Western railway and 11 south from Pontypool, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Wentloog, Newport petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Newport, archdeaconry of Monmouth, and diocese of Llandaff. The church of St. David, repaired in 1858, is an ancient structure, of local sandstone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a small western turret containing one bell: there are 50 sittings. The, register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1696, and marriages from 1756. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Henllys, net yearly value �152, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since, 1900 by the Rev. David Jesse Evans, of St. Bees, who resides at Henllys. Lord Tredegar, who is lord of the manor, and Francis T. E. Prothero esq, of Malpas Court, are chief landowners. The soil is sandy ; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are roots. The area is 1,117 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, �1,608; the population in 1891 was 107.
