PONTNEWYNYDD is a large village, on the Avon Lwyd river, and in 1845 was formed into an ecclesiastical parish from the civil parish of Trevethin; it has a station on the Eastern Valleys branch of the Great Western railway, 1 mile north-west from Pontypool and 162 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Pontypool union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Blaenau Gwent, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff. Pontnewynydd is, under the "Local Government Act, 1894," now added to the parish and urban district of Abersychan.

The church of St. Luke, erected on the site of an older building , removed in 1873, was consecrated in August, 1879, and is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north-east porch, organ chamber and an incomplete tower containing one bell: the stained east window was presented by Mrs. Masters, at a cost of 200, in memory of George Masters, who died. July 2nd, 1891. The reredos, of Penarth and Derbyshire stone, with columns of Irish marble, was erected in 1894, and in 1899 the walls of the church were decorated at a cost of about 100. The church was reseated in 1894, and now affords 400 sittings.

The register dates from the year 1845. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value 195, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Trevethin, and held since 1875 by the Rev.Daniel Owen Davies, of St. David's College, Lampeter, who resides at Freeholdland.

There are Calvinistic Methodist, Wesleyan, Baptist, Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels.

An ornamental cast iron fountain was erected in 1899, by public subscription, at the junction of Hanbury road and St. Luke's road. The Pontnewynydd Sheet and Galvanizing Co. Limited have extensive works here for the manufacture of steel sheets and galvanizing. Here is also a large cake factory and a, brewery. In the dingles of Cwmnantddu and Cwmffrwdoer are coal mines, worked on a somewhat extensive scale. The population in 1891 was 3,409.
