Pontnewydd is 5� miles north from Newport and 3 south from Pontypool and 157� from London. The Eastern Valleys branch of the Great W estern railway from Newport to Blaenavon and Brynmawr has two stations in this parish, viz. Upper Pontnewydd and Pontrhydyrun. The Brecon & Monnouthshire canal runs through the parish.
The " Local Government Act of 1858" (21 & 22 Vict. c. 98) was adopted by the district, Nov. 1870, and it was governed by a local board. Under the provisions of the " Local Government Act, 1894" (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), it is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 12 members.
Water works were erected in 1886 at Llanfrechfa Upper for the supply of water to this parish, Cwmbran, Llantarnam and Pontrhydyrun.
Holy Trinity is an ecclesiastical parish, formed June 25th 1885; the church locally at Pontnewydd, is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, erected in 1860, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower containing one bell. In 1890 the church was considerably enlarged by the addition of a handsome north aisle containing five bays, at a cost of �680: there are memorial windows to two children of the late R. Edmunds esq., JP, and to Betsy Bumford (d. Nov. 13th, 1878); a new organ, costing �250, was added in 1886; a carved oak pulpit with presented in 1890, by friends of the late R Edmunds esq.
The church affords 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1860. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value, �190, with residence, in the gift of Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Richard Jones, of St Aidan's. There are Baptist, Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels.
The Patent Nut and Bolt Company Limited are the principal landowners. The soil is marl; subsoil, clay; the chief crops are Wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and grass. The area of the pa,rish is 2,052 acres of land and 12 of water; the population in 1891 (which includes Griffithstown) Was 4,962. The area of the Urban District is 1,786 acres; rateable value, �10,102; the population in 1891 was 2,780.
