PANTEG is a parish on the river Avon Lwyd, having a station on the Eastern Valleys branch of the Great Western railway from Newport to Blaenavon and Brynmawr, about a mile west from the church. Pontypool Road station also on the Great Western railway, being about 1 mile north-west: it is 159 miles from London, 6 west from Usk, 3 south-east from Pontypool, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Usk, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Pontypool, rural deanery of Usk, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The Brecon and Monmouthshire canal runs through the parish from north to south and passes over the river by an aqueduct. The parish of Panteg adopted the "Local Government Act, 1858," July 15, 1863, and in 1886 by Local Government Board orders, the area of the district was extended by the addition of Griffithstown, and further extended in 1891 by the inclusion of Llanfihangel-Pontymoile.

Under the provisions of the "Local Government Act, 1894 " (56 and 57 Vict. c.73) the district is now divided into 6 wards and governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members.

Here is a small reservoir, supplying this parish and Griffithstown with spring water.

The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the church was rebuilt in 1876 at a cost.of 1,980; the only part of the original church now remaining is the tower, which dates from about 1450: there are 250 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1891. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a rectory, net yearly value 269, including 23 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of John Capel Hanbury esq., and held since 1896 by the Rev. Alfred William Addams Williams M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. There is a Congregational chapel at Upper New Inn, built in 1710, and seating 450, and a Wesleyan chapel at Upper Race.

The offices of the Panteg Urban District Council at Pontymoile, were erected in 1899 at a cost of 1,000. A large mission Hall and institute was erected in 1890 at Pontymoile, at a cost of 2,000, raised by voluntary subscription, chiefly for the benefit of the girls and workpeople connected with the works in the neighbourhood; it consists of mission room, seating 1,000 persons, girls' recreation room and men's luncheon and reading rooms.

Here are coal mines and quarries of limestone and stone for building. Messrs. Alfred Baldwin and Co. Limited, have also large works here for the manufacture of steel and galvanized iron and there are foundries and engineering works. The coal and fire-brick works of the Blaendare Company Limited are at The Race, in this parish.

John Capel Hanbury esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are John Capel Hanbury esq., of Pontypool, Alfred Addams-Williams esq. and the trustees of the late Mrs. Llewellin.

The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are oats and barley, and pasture land.

The area of the parish is 3,529 acres of land and 31 of water, rateable value, 17,419, and the population in 1891 was 3,746.
