Post Office to represent Money Order Office and Savings Bank.
TROSTREY

TROSTREY is a parish on the eastern bank of the river Usk, and near the road between Usk and Abergavenny, 2� miles north-by-west from Usk station on the Monmouth and Pontypool Road line of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Usk, union of Pontypool, county court district of Usk, rural deanery of Raglan, archdeaconry of Monmouth, and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. David is a small but ancient building of stone, in the Gothic style, repaired and re-pewed in 1877; it has a chancel, nave, western porch, and a western turret containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 100 persons . The register of baptisms dates from the year 1723; marriages and burials, 1731. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Bettws-Newydd, joint net yearly value �127, with glebe (�94), in the gift of Sir A. J. Fludyer, bart., of Ayston, Rutland, and the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff alternately, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Herbert Sheppard M.A. of Clare College,Cambridge, who resides at Bettws-Newydd, and is also perpetual curate of Kemeys Commander.

Trostrey Court, an ancient building, was occupied during the time of the Civil Wars by the Parliamentarians; a few years ago some letters and dispatches of Cromwell's were discovered here.

Sir Arthur John Fludyer, bart., of Ayston Hall, Uppingham, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is silurian; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,254 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, �1,057; the population in 1891 was 135.
