The fine ruins of Llantillio Castle, a Norman fortress, supposed to have been built during the usurpation of Stephen, stand on a lofty hill, and are now known by the name of White Castle.
It was once possessed by Brian FitzCount, Earl of Hereford, who followed the Norman Conqueror to England, and was dismantled, as it appears, together with the castles of Skenfrith and Grosmont, by order of King Edward IV. in the Wars of the Roses.
This castle was, with those of Skenfrith and Grosmont, the property of John of Gaunt, and was afterwards attached to the Duchy of Lancaster until its sale to the Beaufort family.
Hen-Gwrt (Old Court), which stood some 200 yards from the church, was formerly one of the seats of Sir David Gam, who was slain after the battle of Agincourt (25 Oct. 1415), and knighted while dying. The Dules of Beaufort until recently owned the manor. The only remains of the mansion now existing are a few stones on an island one acre in extent, and so formed by a moat. At the time of the Civil War, this property formed the deer park belonging to Raglan Castle, and is said to have once been over 400 acres in extent.
Llantillio Court is the seat of Sir Henry Mather-Jackson, bart, D.L., J.P.
The Duke of Beaufort is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir Henry Mather-Jackson, bart, Reginald Vaughan esq., J.P., of Glentrothy, John Parry esq. and James Graham esq.
The soil is chiefly loam; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and a few roots. The area is 6,144 acres of land and 19 of water. The rateable value is 5,503 and the population in 1891 was 640.
