LLANWENARTH CITRA

LLANWENARTH CITRA is a parish on the river Usk, 1� miles north-west from Abergavenny station on the Great Western railway, in the northern.division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Abergavenny, rural deanery of Abergavenny and diocese of Llandaff. The road to Brecon passes through this parish.

The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1785. The living is a rectory, net yearly value �245, including 32 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Frederic Hooper Aldrich-Blake M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge.

The Sugar Loaf Mountain rises to an elevation of 1,954 feet; the Derry, the, Graig, the Rholbin and Llanwenarth Breasthills are spurs from the base of the Sugar Loaf.

Pentre Court is the residence of Henry Lawrence Baker esq. The Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. who is lord of the manor, Major Parkinson and Mrs. Sandeman are the principal landowners.

The soil is sandy; subsoil, stone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,781 acres of land and 31 of water; rateable value, �2,442 and the population in 1891 was 236.
