Was looking for ggrandfather, Archibald Phillips who supposedly was a shoemaker in Monmouth around the turn of the century. Didn't find him, but had fun looking and got quite carried away with "old Monmouth". What a fantastic thing you have set up!

Your Monmouthshire site is wonderful. I found my gggrandfather's brother, James Breakwell, listed and somer other Breakwell who owned Breakwell and Sons Butchers. Do these books exist for earlier years? GGGGrandfather was a minister in Monmouth who died in 1882.

The Newport bit is wonderful 'cos it shows where my great grandma wasn't in 1901. That narrows it down even more and makes the mystery deeper - isn't this hobby wonderful, the more you find out the less you know!

I have just traced an ancestor to Portskewett in the 1881 census. His name was Henry Westall and he is described as a Navvy Tunnel Miner. Once I confirmed that Portskewett was at the entrance to the Severn Tunnel it became a certainty that he worked on it. The family eventually moved to Barry, Glam which is where I was born. Saw the entry for Malpas Your website is wonderful. love the photograph of the cover. You can almost smell the leather. I had a problem downloading the map. When I clicked it on. only 2/3 of the map appeared with a big black rectangle taking up the rest. There is an oral tradition, yet to be verified, that our family came from Malpas, Wales. 1500's 1600's where would I start looking for birth, death, marriage records? He was also supposedly a landowner. Thank you again for your wonderful site.

What a superb site! I can't wait for it to be completed.

Sincere thanks to everybody for your kind comments.
Completing the task is proving technically difficult, as the print in the remaining sections is very small on off-white coarse paper, and my scanner doesn't like it one bit. However, the work is ongoing, and the Newport commercial list is nearly finished.
I am also working on the directory's Introduction Page which starts with the remarkable words "Monmouthshire is an English county ..."
That'll cause some raised eyebrows! However, Kelly's didn't make a mistake. Monmouthshire WAS regarded as being an English county in 1901 but is now safely back home in Wales.

Thank you so much for your site! My father's family came from Monmouthshire and I've been there twice--and found my cousins too. My grandmother received letters (in the early 1920's) from her sister in Crosskeys saying, "How you must miss the hills of Wales, though I understand America is quite beautiful too." Looking at the map I see all the places I've been to, and I miss the hills of Wales. Must be in the blood. I'll be back because it feels like home. Mitzi

Although I live in Risca now, I was brought up in LLandevaud, my great grandfather having been the vicar there at the turn of the century. (Rev. James.Swinnerton)
Prior to this he had been at St. John's Maindee and was instrumental in the founding of the blind woorkshops there.
Your web site is absolutely fascinating and very exciting. My mother was delighted as she remembers many of the people listed and my grandfather being an avid local historian would have loved it! Can't wait for more

In my earlier message (Dec. 5) I said that I had found 3 great-grandparents in the Blaenavon directory. On further thought, I'm not so sure about two of them. I wonder if anyone could give some advice about where to look further to try to run this down. Daniel O'Reardon, listed in the directory as the "Queen's Tax-Collector" was definitely my father's maternal grandfather. My father's paternal grandparents, according to my grandparents' birth certificates and marriage licenses were "Tom Griffiths" and "Annie Griffiths, formerly Banks." When I found your wonderful directory, I took them to be the same people as "Thomas Griffiths," a member of the city council and "Annie Griffiths" who ran "dining rooms." However, my ancestor "Tom Griffiths" is described as a "colliery engineerman," a position which does
