We just returned from a visit to Monmouth area. It was a wonderful trip and we're anxious to return one day. My ancestors lived in this area. I have ancestors who worked in the Blaenaven Ironworks & Coal mines in the mid 1800's by the name of Bowen on my father's line.
Also, my mother's line goes to the Herefordshire area. Her father's family lived in Bosbury, Ledbury and Castle Frome. We visited Raglan Castle and found it so beautiful and peaceful there. It's a gorgeous area. I enjoyed looking over your material. I have a great interest in learning about my ancestors and have enjoyed visiting places where they lived and raised their families in the 1800's and earlier. Thank you. Susan

Can I point out a spelling mistake in the Abergavenny directory? Thomas Henry was a "Maxwell" not a "Maxivell". He was my Great Grandfather.Thankyou very much for the site
Hello Vicky - I have traced this error back to an act of vicious malice by a particularly stupid scanner. Searching for a suitable punishment, I recalled an episode of Fawlty Towers involving Basil thrashing a non-functioning car, and I have acted accordingly using a piece of four by two... It'll think twice before it reads 'w' as 'iv' again, I can tell you! (Best wishes, Bryan)

Just stumbled on your fascinating website, I have a query! The link on Sudbrook Shipyard shows a picture of the "Alpha" fitting out, launched 1899. I'm hoping that this is a typo and should read 1889. I have in my possession the brass builders plate from a hopper barge "Alpha" broken up at Preston 1962/3 - The plate reads "T.A.Walker - No.21 - Sudbrook Shipyard - Monmouthshire - England - 1890". Can anyone out there enlighten me?

Oops! Sorry Paul - that 1899 should have been 1889. Silly place to put the '8', right next to the '9'...

I had hoped to find out what 13 Flannel Street was in 1901, as it was a Butchers Shop in 1800, but could find no mention of it. Number 12 and 14 were still there though. Wish there were sites like this for every county in the UK. Wonderful stuff and thank you for sharing it.

My grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Beddow, daughter of Charles Beddow, who attended Noddfa Chapel before coming to America to keep house for her older brother (also Charles).
They came to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area in the late 1880's. Later other married sisters came to Pittsburgh. Great Grandfather Charles Beddow came later, after his wife died, and lived with several daughters on a rotating basis. Great Granfather Beddow (the bronze marker on his grave spells it Beddoe), Grandmother Elizabeth and husband Fred Rawlings (who grew up at The British, near Talywain, and also attended Noddfa Chapel) are buried in a cemetery in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, not far from Pittsburgh.
Great Grandfather Charles married Mary Ann Harris who later died in 1885 in Blaenavon. They had children including one named John.

Just a note from Bryan, Kellys 1901 webmaster:

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hopefully 2002 should see the completion of the Newport section of the directory. The problem is that this appears to be the most used pages of the old book and my scanner doesn't like soiled and worn pages one little bit!
Sincere thanks to all those of you who have written to me - I really enjoy receiving your emails and will answer questions where I can.
Thanks also to Messrs Kellys Directories (yes they're still going!) for being gracious enough to encourage me in this venture - they've even adopted it as part of their on-line archives!
