Congratulations on a commendable effort. I thought you might be interested to know why I looked at your work.
I had a 3rd great grandfather named Thomas Mitchell who was born in Merthyr Tydfil, just across the border in 1798, but rather curiously listed his place of birth as Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouth.
One of the good folks on one of the lists suggested that this was probably due to a boundary change which sounds pretty reasonable to me. I was also interested to discover that Monmouth was for a time administratively part of England.
Thomas identified his Welsh origins in his U.S. citizenship papers and one of his many children listed him as being born in Wales in one U.S. census, but every other one of the dozen or more references to him in the census identify him as English born.

Love your site! My g-g-grandparents, Benjamin Yeates and Ann Kidson, were married in St. Mary's parish church 27 May 1827. Their daughter Sarah was also married at St. Mary's to George Williams, from Pembrokeshire, 26 March 1849.
They emmigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1857. My grand-dad, David Williams was one of their 10 children.
In the Canadian censuses my great grand-dad always listed his nationality as Welsh, while Sarah considered herself English!
Kelly's directory is late for my ancestors, but I suspect The Tippens, and Yeates listed are somehow distantly related!
Benjamin was a draper, and funeral director in Monmouth in the early 1800's. We visited Monmouth and surrounding area a few years ago and LOVED it.
We hope to get back again soon. I'd like to hear from anyone researching Yeates or Kidson,

Hello there
I bought a house on Caerleon Road, Newport last year. The house is in a terrace of about 8 all with different names - mine is called Torvane. Our surveyor said that the house was built in 1907 but when we were taking down the ceiling in the basement we found a newspaper in the rafters from 1901!
We did a bit of research and found out that the first person to live in the house was called Ernest Thornton.
Our house is not far from the St Julians Public House.
I've been on your directory but Caerleon Road seems to stop - can you tell me if this part of Caerleon Road was called but a different name?

I am researching my Welsh ancestors. My Steed family lived in Newport. My g.g.g.grandfather, William Jones, was a Butcher at Ruperra Castle and Tredegar Park working for Lord Tredegar.
His son, Zephaniah, lived in Blacktown, Marshfield. One of his children, Elizabeth married William Edward Davies and "Grandma Davies" was known in 1926 at St. Bride's as the lady who had a tea shop on the beach called the Waverley Cafe.
Her husband's family came from Uzmaston, Pembroke and he was born in Llanilar.

You've done a beautiful job on your site. Thank-you for all your hard work. I love the detail given to each area.
My great grandmother, Mary Anne Webber Thomas, died at 71 King St., Blaenavon, Monmouthshire in Feb. 1901.
She and her husband, Llewellyn Thomas, were originally from Cardiff, Glamorgan. They were living near Cardiff in Barry in 1891. Llewellyn was a Tobacconist.
I don't see Llewellyn in the 1901 Kellys Directory but there is a Thomas, John, pawnbroker & draper, 53 Broad street & 1 King street. Could someone please tell me if there is/was a 71 King St.?
It's very sad, They must have been having a very difficult time as they had five small children. Llewellyn, I know, went back to Cardiff with the children and they must have missed census's in both places as I cannot find them.

What a great site. So interesting. I'm looking for MURRAYS in Caerleon, and I also now know a bit more about Caerleon which I didn't know before. Many thanks for the history.

Hi Friends - just a note that might help researchers! Firstly try not to describe the country of 'Great Britain' simply as 'England'. Great Britain (or the UK if you prefer) consists of four "states" named Wales, Scotland. Northern Ireland and England. England has no greater status than the others!
Secondly, just a reminder that a date expressed as 5/9/99 (for example) would be read as the 5th of September 1999 in Great Britain, but as the 9th of May 1999 in North America and elsewhere. This can cause confusion when reading records of births etc.
Lastly, when referring to American states, please write them in full. Many of us poor Brits have no idea what MO, IL, FL or CA actually mean!
Talk about two nations divided by a common language...
Sincere best wishes to you all, and thanks for your kind comments.

Bryan in Caerwent.

I am looking for information on my father's side of the family. My father, Stanley William Batchelor, was born 15th February 1920 and lived in Newport Monthmouthshire. I have located his address in Castle Street at the Newport library but Kelly's 1901 does not show the family as living there. Can anyone assist in locating where they all came from? Believe his father's name to be William Stanley Batchelor.

Im trying to trace information on Llandevaud Church/School, (Monmouthshire).
I know there was a school group photo taken around 1952/3 for the queens coronation but any photos would be of interest.
Also, Im looking for the actual date of the memorial window featuring 'The Risen Christ' placed in the church in the early 60s.
Again any information on the history would be most helpful. If anyone can help I would be more that grateful and would of course cover any costs.

It is not listed in this directory. My father went to Durham Road School when Mr Banister was headmaster.

That's because your grandfather's business isn't in the directory, Roger, and neither is York Road. This is 1901 remember.

Very interesting website. I found my great, great grandfather who was the manager at the Co-Operative Society Ltd. in Garndiffaith. His name was James Silcock and not Silcox as stated.
Could I ask for this to be amended please.

Hello Michael - thanks for your note. If there is a spelling mistake in the original, as in this case, we must remember that we are dealing with what is after all a historic document. To me, a minor error such this adds to the 'character' of the old book. If I was to amend all Mr. Kelly's errors (and there are plenty!), then it would compromise the historical integrity of the original document.
Had the error been mine of course, I would rectify it immediately and apologetically.
Best wishes, and thankyou for taking the trouble to write. At least we know the correct spelling!

Good to have this background to family. However Holly Bush was "listed under Bedwellty" but did not appear to be there. GGrandad James ROBERTS was a grocer and subpost office in Holly Bush in 1904 Kelly - was he there in 1901?

Hello Karen - thanks for your interest in the directory. I have just checked with the book itself, and the index does indeed list Holly Bush as "see Bedwellty". However, as you will have seen already, Holly Bush gets a couple of mentions as being a railway station but nothing else. We can only assume that your Great Grandfather Roberts got off the train at Holly Bush and started a business there - after 1901!
Best wishes

Originally from, and still a frequent visitor to, Newport.
I am investigating history of Clewer Court, Oakfield Road, Newport, built in about 1890 as an orphanage, and converted to flats about 1946.
It was apparently used by the American army during WWII as a communications centre, so maybe there are some US servicemen who can recall working there.

What a shame you don't have a J section.
Why?

Simple, Nikster. In 1901 there were no settlements of any prominence in Monmouthshire that began with the letter "J".
The 1901 Kellys Directory index page goes ...Howick, Ifton, Itton, Kemeys-Commander, Kemeys-Inferior and so on.
No "J" I'm afraid. Hard to believe, but it's a fact!
Best wishes

I'm searching for information on Bartlett Graham Wall, born approximately 1871/72 in, I believe, Newport.
His parents were Thomas and Fane Wall(nee Davies). He was a butcher by occupation, and is believed to have lived "off" Caerleon Road.
His father Thomas Wall died in 1874 and he had a stepfather William Broomsgrove. If any one has any information, could they reply to my e-mail address
