The Blair Family

| Origins of the Name and
the Family The Blair family originated in Scotland, where the name was used to describe the places the family lived. The name was later linked to the family itself. Much has already been said on the web's Blair sites about the Blair name and history. Rather than repeat what is already well done, I will refer you to those sites (see links below for Blair Society for Genealogical Research and Joe Blair's Guide to Blair Genealogy).
Origins in Colonial America
Though Blair is a Scottish surname, American descendants have often been surprised to find that their Blair ancestors immigrated from Ireland. Due to political and religious strife, many Scots moved into Ireland at various times in Scottish history. Even though some Scots families appeared to have lived in Ireland for centuries, historians say that the Scots and the Irish didn't mix much. To the contrary, the Irish often resented the Scots, and there were many confrontations between the two groups. This is just one example of why it is essential for genealogists to have a good knowledge of history and immigration patterns. Many Blairs immigrated to America during the 1700's, before and after the Revolutionary War, settling in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Some families even started out in Pennsylvania and moved south into Virginia. The Blairs that this site deals with were Scotch-Irish and lived in Augusta County, Virginia, with some descendents moving into Grainger County, Tennessee, and later into Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Idaho, among other states.
