Origins of the Name

People researching the Herron name will find a variety of spellings:  Heron, Haron, Haroun, Herrin, and even Herring or Haering.  The public records of Schoharie County, New York, show all of those spellings for the same family.  Spelling aside, of what nationality is the Herron name?  The answer to that will lie with the individual family.  Internet sites show Herrons from Scotland, England, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Origins in Colonial America         "© 2000 www.barrysclipart.com"

The earliest proven ancestor in our Herron line is James Herron (b. 10 Sep 1806).  James married his sweetheart, Catharine "Caty" Bouck, in the city of Schoharie, in Schoharie County, New York.   In not too many years, James and Catharine migrated with her parents to Michigan.  There in Michigan, James and his wife, along with her brother, were early converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I have a letter written by their granddaughter, Grace Herron Peterson, in the 1930's, while she researched the family genealogy.  I also have copies of old archives sheets that Grace submitted to the Family History Library.  Grace believed that James Herron's father was John Herron and that his mother was Mary ______.   I have, as yet, found nothing in the Schoharie County records to either prove or disprove that relationship, though I have come across some leads.

At this point in the research, it appears that our Herron line might descend from John and Agnes Henry Herron,  who settled in Schoharie County, New York, in the 1700's.   We have several sources of information that seem to contradict each other -- a common problem for genealogists!  We have also found a major source submitted by a descendant of John & Agnes that has linked some Herrons to the wrong family.  Oops!  So, researchers of this Herron family had better beware and check out the facts.

Schoharie County records show other Herrons, perhaps relatives of John and Agnes,  were bringing their children to the Schoharie County churches for christenings.  Were these Herrons connected?   If anyone knows whom these other Herrons were, please tell me!

In trying to sort out my own Herron lines, I've gathered info on any pre 1850 Herron  I've found in Schoharie County and put it into a database.  Since William Herron (son of John and Agnes) and  his wife, Maria Bellinger, stayed in Schoharie County, there is quite a bit of information on their descendants -- too bad that's not my line!   I'd be very much interested in hearing from you if you have information on descendants from the other Herrons from Schoharie County, New York.  Email me, and we'll compare notes. Several of us are currently researching this family and collaborating together. We'd love to include you!
