In the matter of the Pension Claim of

came before me, a
notary public in and
for aforesaid County and State,
William D Keyhill of Schell City
Vernon,
state of Missouri, who, being duly sworn,
declares in relation to the aforesaid claim that his
age is 48 years; that he is the identical person who served
as a Private in Co. E, Reg't
30 Tenn Cav Vols.,
and knows the above soldier, who was a member of Co D,
14 Reg't Iowa Vol
that on or about the 10 day of October
winter of 1864, while in th eline of duty, and
without fault or improper conduct on his part, at or
near Cahaba, State of Alabama,
said soldier incurred Injury of eyes by smoke of
wood fires while in prison.
The soldiers was in prison and was
compelled to cook with hundreds of others
by wood fires built on the ground and
thesmoke made many of them blind
I did not see him when discharged
but have been intimately acquainted
with him since, and know he can hardly
see without the use of spectacles, I
know furthermore his eyes were good
when he was taken prisoner.
I was was with the soldier in th
ethe
prison and know his eyes were good when
he was imprisoned, and I also know he
received the injury to his eyes while there.
I know many others whose eyes were
almost lost at the same time and place
from the same cause. I know several
that could not see to march after they
were released from prison, but I
cannot now recall their names.
Affiant further declares that he has no interest, direct
or inderect, in this claim, and that he makes the
above statement from personal knowledge

1883; and I hereby certify that the contents of
the foregoing affidavit were fully made known and explained
by me to the affiant before swearing thereto, including

in the seventh line
erased, and the words ________________________________________________,
added;
that the affiant is to me well known and is respectable
and worthy of full credit , and that
I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution
of this claim.
