Case of David H. Savage, No. 291007
On this 16th day of October, 1884, at McConnellsville, County of Morgan, State of Ohio, before me, John A Carr, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Lewis D H Pennell, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories to him during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:
Q. Please state your age, occupation, postoffice address, military service, and relationship to claimant
A. I am in my 60th year; day laborer, McConnellsville, Morgan Co., Ohio; private Co B, 62d Ohil Vols; not related
Q. How long have you known Mr. Savage?
A. I became personally acquainted with him about 1867.
Q. What was his condition at that time?
A. Well, he was complaining a great deal of his eyes hurting him; they were inflamed.
Q. How long did they continue so - inflamed?
A. I don't just recollect how long. I frequently saw him, and the whites of his eyes were bloodshot.
Q. Was he suffering from any other cause?
A. I don't remember whether he was complaining. I have frequently heard him complain of his heart.
Q. What was the matter with his heart?
A. Of a fluttering; you could see his heart fluttering or beating across a room.
Q. How long did he complain of this heart trouble?
A. I lived right by him for four years - until about three years ago, and he always complained.
Q. Did you ever see him in a nude condition - so as to see his heart beat?
A. No, only in his pants and shirt.
Q. About how large a room was it, where you could see his heart beat - clear across a room?
A. Across a room the size of this one - about 16 feet square.
Q. Did you ever know of anything else than heart trouble and eye trouble.
A. No
