18 Nov 1884 - Deposition, Mrs Amanda M Savage 18 Nov 1884 - Deposition, Mrs Amanda M Savage

DEPOSITION I
Case of David H. Savage, No. 291007

On this 18th day of November, 1884, at McConnellsville, County of Morgan, State of Ohio, before me, John A Carr, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Mrs. Amanda M. Savage, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:

Q. Please state your age, occupation, posoffice address, and relationship to claimant.

A. I am 49 years old, house-wife of Joseph Savage; postoffice McConnelsville, Morgan Co., Ohio; my husband is claimant's uncle.

Q. When did you form the acquaintance of David H Savage?

A. I have known him ever since he was a small boy.

Q. How near him did you live before 1861 - up to that year? How often would you see him?

A. We lived in the same little village for many years, and we would see each other every week - sometimes every day up to the time he enlisted.

Q. Before he enlisted, what was his physical condition? What ailment, if any, did he ever suffer from?

A. I do not know that he ever suffered from anything. I do not remember of any thing. From the time he was a small boy he worked in the shop with his father, and I never heard of anything wrong with him.

Q. How soon after his return did you see him? What was his condition then?

A. I think I saw him the same day. He came home from the army sick; he looked very bad.

Q. What was ailing him?

A. He was poor and weak and sick, and had sore eyes.

Q. In what way did his eyes seem affected?

A. Sore and weak and red.

Q. Aside from the sore eyes, what ailed him?

A. He looked poor and sick; I supposed he got his sickness from being out. I do not remember just what is was - only that he was sick; don't know that I can tell.

Q. Do you remember what portion of him was affected?

A. I don't know that I do - at the time he came home, I remember him looking very bad.

Q. How long did he continue in that condition?

A. I can not just say - but it must have been sometime.

Q. Since that time what has been his condition?

A. At times he has seemed pretty smart, and at other times he has not been so stout; he has not been so stout at any time since.

Q. Have you known what ailed him at any time?

A. Some 15 or 16 years agoe we lived in the same building - and have always lived close - and I knew that he complained of his heart. He would often come in from the shop - which was next door - he would look pale, as if he was going to drop; he looked pale. We had to rub him and give him something hot; the doctors said it was heart disease, and I presume it was; it was Dr. Parker.

Q. When did he first suffer from heart disease?

A. The first I knew of it was 15 or 16 years ago; I had heard of it before that, but it was at that time that we again moved near each other in this place.

Q. How often did he have any attack or spells of this kind?

A. Very often, but I can not say how often. I think the trouble has continued up to this present, as often as once a month.

Q. How long did the sore eyes continue?

A. I don't know that I can just tell but sometime. They were not so sore afterward, but he has never been able to see as well since. His eyesight has always been affected since.
