Case of David H. Savage, No. 291007
On this 20th day of November, 1884, near Stockport, County of Morgan, State of Ohio, before me, John A Carr, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Christopher C Heskett, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories to him during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:
Q. Please state your age, occupation, postoffice address, military service, and relationship to claimant.
A. I am 51; stone=mason; Stockport, Morgan Co., Ohio; private Co. F 77th Ohio Vols; no relationship
Q. When did you form his acquaintance?
A. Some 30 years ago - perhaps 35 years ago. I made my home with them in 1855.
Q. What disease or ailment did he suffer from at any time up to 1861?
A. I do not know that he had any disease of any kind up to the time he enlisted; I knew him to have ague once, I made my home with him from 1855 to 1861
Q. What was his condition in the service?
A. Well for a little while he was all right. He took measles before we got out Marietta. This went to his eyes. When we went fom Marietta to Camp Dennison the weather was cold and snowy, and it caused the measles to affect his whole system. His eyes got sore.
Q. When did his eyes begin to get sore?
A. Well, before he got fairly over the measles his eyes began to get sore.
Q. How long did they remain sore?
A. I don't think they have ever been as well since that time as they were before.
Q. Have they been sore all the time?
A. I can tsay they have been exactly sore, but they were weak, and he could not see well.
Q. How near him have you lived since th ewar?
A. Part of the time two miles, then 3 or 4, then 7 miles; I was away a year or so.
Q. Aside from weak eyes has he suffered from anything?
A. I can only say from hearsay; I have heard him say he has heart disease; that was ten years or more ago. I cant say certain whether it was he or some one else told me about it.
Q. What changes have taken place in the condition and appearance of his eyes from the time he had measles until now?
A. I have not noticed much difference in his eyes from the first. They are not as sore=looking as they were in the service. They were then more red and inflamed looking. He did not do much duty - only guard duty around headquarters, That is my impression now.
