Zanesville Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio, January 6, 2007
ZANESVILLE -James E. "Jim" Walpole, 79, of Zanesville, passed away at
6:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at his residence following a short
illness. He was born April 22, 1927, in Zanesville, to the late
Walter V. and Isabelle Lawson Walpole. He was a lifelong resident of
Zanesville, and member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He
retired from Continental Can Company/American National Can Company of
Newark, following 38 years of service. Following retirement, he worked
for Northside Pharmacy for 15 years delivering medicines and supplies
to local residents and facilities. He was well known in the community
as a kind and caring man, quick to offer a smile, a generous gesture
and an encouraging word. His positive attitude and outlook on life
was a comfort to his many friends, and his loving family. He was
respected and admired by all who knew him. Jim was a veteran of the
armed services having served a total of 11 years in service to his
country. He served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps.
He served as Seaman 1st class in the U.S. Navy for three years and
retired from the military as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps
after eight years of service. He served during both World War II and
the Korean War. He completed his military in 1953. Jim was a member
of Monsignor Drury Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid
music fan and found many ways to make music part of everyday life.
With very little formal instruction, his talent and love of music
inspired him to play several instruments over the course of his life,
including the harmonica, accordion, guitar, and organ. He inspired
all who heard him play. He was a sailor, a soldier, a musician, a
loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a dear friend. He was a
remarkable man who will be sadly missed. He is survived by two sons,
James E. (Dora) Walpole Jr., and Joseph E. (fiance Becky Wolfe)
Walpole both of Zanesville; four daughters, Linda M. (John) McKribben
of Columbus, Elaine K. (Jeff) Morrow and Sheila K. (Jess) Bates of

The Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio, Monday, May 10, 1965, page 1
Charges Due Today in Fatal Shooting
Charges will be filed today agains Walter (Mitch) Mitchell, 67, in
connection with the fatal shooting Saturday night of Robert Ray
Jones, 50, of 922 Price street where Mitchell roomed. Police said
the shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. following an argument
but that the victim lay more than two hours, his family unaware that
he was dead. Police Chief George Hodgson said he and Detective Sgt.
Richard Tracy will confer with Prosecutor Richard E Bridwell today
as to the degree of homicide charge to be filed. Mitchell, a 5 foot,
4-inch handyman, was being held without bond at the county jail.
Hodgson gave this account of the incident: Mitchell and Jones argued
briefly about whether or not Jones was going to a new job today.
The argument resulted in a scuffle between the pair. Mitchell has
had no regular employment but took odd jobs as they became available.
After the scuffle in the kitchen of the home, Mitchell returned to
his bedroom and got a .38 caliber revolver. Mitchell told
authorities he feared Jones was coming after him. Mitchell then
fired at Jones. He said he didn't know whether or not Jones was
hurt. The shooting ocurred in or near a hallway on the first floor
of the two-story frame dwelling. An autopsy at Bethesda Hospital
showed the bullet entered Jones' right side near his shoulder and
pierced his heart. Only one shot was fired. Mrs. Etta Jones, mother
of the victim, called police shortly after midnight to report the
incident. She said she heard a shot but did not realize her son had
been hit. She told officers she asked her son if he was hurt and he
said he would be all right. Jones was dead when the police arrived.
The exact time of death has not been determened. Mitchell was still
in his room and was taken into custody by police. Mrs. Jones was the
only other person in the house when the shooting occurred. She
called police after one of her daughters, Mrs. Margaret Doverspike,
returned home. Mrs. Doverspike told her mother she though Robert was
dead. Jones' wife died three years ago. His father, Wilbur Jones,
has been dead 15 years. Surviving in addition to his mother are
three sisters, Mrs. Doverspike and Mrs. Kathryn Bright, both of the
home, and Mrs. Eleanor Crumbaker of 924 Price street, and a brother,
Raymond of 943 Orchard street. The body was taken to Putnam Chapel
of Bolin Funeral Home where friends may call after 6 p.m. today.
