The Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio, Saturday, October 18, 1958
Stockport Couple Die in Rout 77 Accident
BEVERLY- Leonard Calendine, well-known Stockport resident and retired
operator of a hardware store, and his wife, the former Lottie Mell,
were fatally hurt Friday about 7 p.m. when two autos hit nearly
head-on in an intense fog two miles north of here on Ohio 77.
Critically hurt was the Calendine's granddaughter, Mrs. Delores
Hunter, about 25, also of Stockport. She was riding in the backseat
of the auto driven by Calendine. Less seriously injured was the
driver of the other car, Otis Hooper of McConnelsville Route 3.
Friends of the Calendies said they were both in their mid-50s, while
Hooper is about the same age. The Ohio highway patrol at Marietta
was investigating the crash. No cause was known. The Calendines
and Mrs. Hunter had apparently attended evangelistic services at
Beverly and were en route home. The Hooper car was traveling north.
Scene of the crash was on a long curve of the two-lane highway about
13 miles south of McConnelsville in Washington county, near the
junction of Ohio 76. Mrs. Calendie was hurled from the auto by the
impact. Both she and her husband died of multiple injuries. The
granddaughter was reported to be unconscious with a head injury. She
also sustained a possible fracture of an ankle, and other body and
limb wounds. Hooper sustained several broken teeth and face cuts and
a leg injury. Both were taken to the Marietta Memorial hospital in
a McCurdy ambulance from Beverly. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs.
Calendine were taken to the McCurdy funeral home and later removed
to the Miller funeral home at McConnelsville. Survivors include a
son Ralph., who operates the hardware store at Stockport; and two
daughters, Mrs. Capitola Shaner of Stockport and Lucille, who resides
in California.
