ARCHER CITY, Texas., Sept. 28
Mrs. E.Harrison Ikard, who was last Friday appointed by the
commissioners court of Archer County to serve the unexpired term
of her husband as sheriff and tax collector, was before her marriage
Miss Maude Parnell. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Parnell
of Chico, Texas, and sister of Senator J.D. Parnell and Dr. L.D.
Parnell, both well known citizens of Wichita Falls. Mrs. Ikard was
born and reared at Chico, Texas. After completing school at that
place, she attended Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, where
she completed her study of music. She came to Archer City in 1919
to teach music in the public school, teaching three successive terms.
In June, 1922, Miss Maude Parnell was married to E.H. Ikard, after
which they made their home in Archer City. Mr. Ikard was engaged in
the cattle industry and also taught in the public school here until
he was elected sheriff and tax collector. Their only child is a
little girl not yet two years old. With Mr. Ikard's election, Archer
county won the distinction of having the youngest sheriff in Texas.
She can still claim that distinction for Mrs. Ikard is only 27 years
old. When the commissioners' court observed Friday a petition
bearing hundreds of names was presented asking for the appointment
of Mrs. Ikard. Telephone messages came from all parts of the county
from people who had not had an opportunity to sign the petition
urging the court to appoint her. No other name was considered by the
court and she received the appointment by the unanimous vote. All
pledged her their support in carrying out the work that her husband
gave his life for - that of preserving law and order and ridding
this county of the lawless element that has followed the oil boom.
Her chief deputy will be R.H. (Cowboy) Mumford, who was with Mr.
Ikard when he lost his life, while Joe McDonald will have charge of
the collector's office.
