Death Removes Great Granddaughter of Chemung County's First Settler
(handwritten date of March 31, 1938)
A FINAL chapter on fourth generation descendants of Elmira's first
settler was concluded with the recent death of Mrs. Helen Culp Payne,
last surviving great grand-daughter of Col. John Hendy. Mrs. Payne
was a granddaughter of Rebecca Hendy, oldest daughter of the colonel,
reputedly first white child ever to have set foot on vicinity
ground. Rebecca married Harry Culp, and Mrs. Payne's father, Harry
Jr., was one of their many children. Mrs. Payne, who died at 88,
was the youngest of Harry Jr.'s five offspring. ALMOST the entire
life of this woman, whose roots go so deep into local soil, was spent
in Chemung County. Born at Hendy Hollow, she lived there for many
years after her first marriage to Alfred Baldwin of North Chemung.
Her one daughter, Cora, who married George Earl, died in childbirth
and six months later tragedy again struck with the death of Mr.
Baldwin. After many years, of widowhood, she married George Payne
of Millerton, Pa. On his death she entered the Home for the Aged
where she lived for almost nine years until the time of her passing.
Mrs. Charles Wickham, 711 Lake St., and Mrs. Addie MacDowall, 924
Laurel St., grandnieces of Mrs. Payne, are her only near relatives
living in Elmira, but the city is still peopled with substantial
citizens descended from other branches of the Hendy family who still
recall with pride romantic stories told of their progenitor. AFTER
A distinguished, service under General Washington in the
Revolutionary War, Colonel Hendy paddled up the Chemung River ----
then the Tioga River ---- in a home-made canoe, arriving in April
1788. After surveying the land, he chose West Elmira, near Rorick's
Glen, as a suitable location for a permanent dwelling. With the
aid of a bound boy, Dan Hill, he constructed a substantial home,
chimney of which is still standing. In October he made the tortuous
trip by river to Wilkes-Barre and back for his wife and three
children, Samuel, Rebecca and Sallie. Rebecca, then five and the
oldest child, ran up to the cabin ahead of the other children, thus
winning her title of first white child ever to touch local soil.
Subsequently seven other children were born to the Hendys. Escapades
of Col. Hendy and his family with the Indians; some friendly, some
hostile; tales of his bravery and prodigious strength became legend
in the vicinity of Newtown, later renamed Elmira. ALWAYS PROMINENT
in local civic affairs, Colonel Hendy was chosen to throw up the
first shovelful of earth for the Chemung Canal in 1831, a project
then of immense value to the county. He died in 1840, and his body,
first interred in the Wisner Park burying ground, has since been
transferred to Woodlawn Cemetery.
