MRS LONGLEY IS CALLED TO REST
Has been sufferer from rheumatism for forty-four years
Had been noted for artificial flowersmade from milkweed
Mrs. Emma D. Longley, who had been in failing health for some time
passed away at two o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Daniel Fisher, 226 Twenty-fifth St. N. Death was due to general
debility, and ended an illness of forty-four years, during which time
she was unable to walk due to rheumatism. Mrs. Longley was one of
the early pioneers of the county. She was born in Maine in 1846, and
in 1862 was married to James Longley of Ohio. They came to Minnesota
five years later, and settled on a farm near Rockville where she
lived until eight years ago when she came to St. Cloud. Mr. Longley
died in 1903. Suffering from an illness that kept her bed-ridden for
more than half her lifetime, Mrs. Longley has given an example of
courage in the face of difficulties that might well put to shame
many more fortunately situated. Thirty-two years ago she took
lessons by correspondence from a woman at Becker, an invalid like
herself, in the art of making flowers out of milkweed silk. The
flowers have been sent by those who purchased them here to many
countries of Europe, and wholly half the states of the Union, on
this side of the water. A large number of lodges of St. Cloud have
their emblems made by the patient fingers of the sick woman. She
dyed the silk to produce the colors she desired. Surviving are a
son, C.F. Longley of St. Paul, a daughter, Mrs. Fisher, a brother,
J.F. Davis of St. Cloud, a sister, Mrs. Ada Worthing of Minneapolis
and three grandchildren and one great-grandson. Her son and Mrs.
Worthing have been in the city for several days called by her serious
illness. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at ten o'clock
from the Glass undertaking parlors. The body will be placed in the
North Star vault until spring.
St. Cloud Daily Journal, Wed., Feb 18, 1920:
MRS. LONGLEY RITES FRIDAY
Aged Woman With Exceptional Talent of Making Flowers Dies
Mrs. Emma Longley, age 74, passed away at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Daniel Fischer, this morning at one-thirty o'clock. Mrs. Longley
had been ailing all winter. She was born in Maine on April 9, 1848,
and came to Rockville, where she resided until eight years ago, when
she moved there to make her home with her daughter. She has been an
invalid for the past forty years and was not able to be up and
around. But, in spite of this, she had a talent that no other person
posseses and that was the making of artificial flowers of milkweed
pods. She received the directions for making these flowers from a
lady at Becker 31 years ago, but the lady passed away some years ago
leaving her receipt with no one else but Mrs. Longley. Mrs. Longley
has been very kind to all her friends and whenever there was any
sickness she would remember them with flowers. She made emblems
for every lodge in this city, and five different foreign countries
have sent for some of these and every state in the United States has
samples. She took great pleasure in this work and with her patience,
they were made perfect. She did her own dyeing of the flowers to
represent the natural ones. She leaves many beautiful remembrances
in St. Cloud of her artistic work. Surviving her are her two
children, Mrs. Fred Longley of Minneapolis and Mrs. Daniel Fischer
of this city and a sister, Mrs. J.F. Worthing of Minneapolis and
Joe F. Davis of this city. The funeral will be held Friday morning
at ten o'clock from the Glass Undertaking Parlors. Remains will be
placed in the vault at the North Star cemetery.
