Vergie Mae Cox, 86, of Stamford, Texas, died Sunday, February 1, 1998 in a Stamford hospital. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 1998 in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Abernathy officiating. Burial was held in the Highland Memorial Cemetery, Stamford, Texas. Mrs. Cox was born on October 13, 1911 in Goldthwaite. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Octor and Julia Wesson Taylor. She married Herman Elmer Cox on July 15, 1931 in Goldthwaite. She was a homemaker and for many years assisted her husband in the operation of the family farm equipment business in Stamford. Mrs. Cox had lived in Stamford since 1931, moving from Goldthwaite. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, a past matron of the Stamford Chapter #269 Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class. Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband, Herman Elmer Cox of Stamford; sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph E. and Betty Ann Cox of Dallas, B. Wayne Cox, Capt. (Ret) USN of Dayton, OH and Wilbur L. and Hoa Cox of Stamford; four granddaughters, Jennifer Renee Cox of Sunnyvale CA, Cynthia Michelle Cox of Sunnyvale CA, Julie Cox Wilson of Austin and Lien Lea Cox of Washington, D.C., one brother Joseph W. Taylor of Goldthwaite; and two sisters, Lucille Fuqua of Montgomery and Arlie Gandy of Bethany, OK. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Charles L. Cox and three brothers, John S. Taylor, Clyde Taylor and Curtis L. Taylor. Pallbearers were Bobby Jones, Robert McLellan, Leldon Clifton, J. C. Riddle, Buddy Jones, and Marc Lovvorn.
