Dewite S. "Bear Hunter" Hunter, 83, Auburn, died Jan. 19 at his home near Auburn. He was born Feb. 24, 1919 in Blaine. He had worked for the Goodyear Tire Co. in Topeka as a slitter operator for 31 years until his retirement. He had been a pastor in Fostoria, Denison, Holton, Topeka and Auburn for many years. Before the war, he was in the C.C.C. and the W.P.A. He had served with the U.S. Army during WWII as a tech 5 with the 438th Signal Construction Battalion in Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a member of the Topeka American Legion and a life member of the V.F.W. He was married to Nellie Kurtz on June 14, 1944, by proxy while he was in France. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Sterling Hunter, Auburn; two daughters, Goldie Baxter, Wakarusa, and Benalea Todd, Maple Hill; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Dover Federated Church. Burial will follow in the Huff Cemetery near Fostoria. Mr. Hunter will lie in state from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Dewite Hunter Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral home, Box 160, Lyndon, 66451.

AUBURN --- Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Federated Church in Dover for Dewite S. "Bear Hunter" Hunter, 83, who died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at his home near Auburn. He was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Blaine, to Benjamin Marvin and Emma C. Conaway Hunter. He lived in the Fostoria community in Pottawatomie County and Topeka before he moved to the Auburn community in 1965. He had worked at the Topeka Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant as a slitter operator for 31 years before he retired. He had been a minister at churches in Fostoria, Denison, Topeka and Auburn many years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 438th Signal Construction Battalion in the Army. He participated in battles in northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Before the war, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration. He was a member of an American Legion post in Topeka and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Nellie Kurtz on June 14, 1944, by proxy while he was in military service in France. She survives. A grandson, Paul Baxter, preceded him in death. Other survivors include a son, Sterling Hunter, Auburn; two daughters, Goldie Baxter, Wakarusa, and Benalea Todd, Maple Hill; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Huff Cemetery near Fostoria. Mr. Hunter will lie in state from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Contributions may be made to the Dewite Hunter Memorial Fund yet to be designated and sent in care of the funeral home.
