There was a Jane Longley who married James Stallard in Muskingum
Co., 18 Oct 1849. She could be a widow or child of this unknown
son, or from the Massachusetts Longley families located in
southwestern Ohio. I tend to think she is tied into this bunch though
since marriages usually took place in the counties where the bride
lived. I find no evidence that any of the MA Longleys lived in
Muskingum county near that time.
-------------------------------------------------------
Paul and Dana Longley found an interesting article about Apache Jack
that might tie into this unknown Longley.
The source is a magazine
Frontier West
December, 1972 - Vol 2, No 6
Reese Publishing Company, New York
The magazine is still under copyright, so here's a synopsis....
There is a mystery about a boy named Matt Longley. Matt was born
about 1844. About 1856, he was traveling with his parents Jeff and
Sarah Longley from Ohio in a wagon train on the Sante Fe Trail. The
immigrants were attacked by Jicarilla Apaches and everyone was killed
except Matt. He was captured by the Apaches and adopted into the
tribe. By age 16 (abt 1860), he was leading a group of warring apaches
and attacking and killing settlers. He was known to white folks as
"Apache Jack". To the Apaches, he was called "White Soldier". He
was brought to justice by Kit Carson's bunch in a raid on 22 Oct 1866
near Fort Union and died ten days later from those wounds.
Was Jeff the unknown son of George? If Matt was born in 1844, then
that would likely make Jeff born 1804-1825 (assuming he was 19 to 40
years of age when Matt was born). That overlaps the age of the unknown
son. I don't think he could have been older than 40 when Matt was
born - at least I haven't heard of many 52 year-olds starting out
on wagon trains.
I've looked in for all LONGLEY, LONGLY, LANGLY, LANGLEY marriages in
Ohio (Family History Library - IGI), but have never seen a Jeff Longley.
Note - not all the Ohio counties are available in the online IGI. And
they could have crossed state lines to get married (West Virginia?)
Also, Thomas Jefferson Longley was a name used a few times by the family,
Having a "Jeff" in the line is at least plausible.
The article in the magazine has a very clear picture of Matt at age four.
were photographs taken in 1848? The earlist photograph known is dated
1825 (heliography). Daguerreotypes made news in 1839. The Colloidian
process became known in 1851. The tin-type was introduced in 1853.
I think it unlikely that such a clear photograph would exist of Matt
at age four - it is probably fake.
I've looked in all the
census indexes for LONGLEY, LONGLY, LANGLY, LANGLEY and haven't found
a Jeff in any of the 1840 or 1850 census indexes.
He (the unknown son) wasn't enumerated with his parents in 1840, nor
with any of his brothers or sister. Was he out on his own, but missed
in the index? Was he living and working on someone else's farm?
Was he newly married and living with his in-laws? (either of the latter
are very plausible)
The 1850 census lists everyone by name. He doesn't show up in the
index for Ohio. Was he living with another Longley family? Did he
get missed by the index? Had he already started the trail west? (or at
least left Ohio?)
I did a search to see what I could find about Apache Jack and found the
following dime novels:
Frederick Dewey.
The Dog Avenger; or, Apache Jack's Desert Trail. April 1, 1873.
Printed in:
Starr's American Novels, no. 114;
Pocket Novels, no. 44;
New Dime Novels, no. 599;
Half-Dime Library, no. 478.
I don't know if that story is about Matt Longley or not, I haven't
yet located a copy.
